kip
Slang term (Irish)
An untidy, dirty or unattractive place.
"Your bedroom is such a kip, man!"
"Tidy up this kip!"
"Oh, what a fucking kip! Im out of here!"
Information provided by Urban Dictionary. #trendy
Nail on head pal.
If someone is a scruffy so-and-so, are they then referred to as a 'kipper' ??
As for UKIP..........
Haha. It was an 18th century term for a brothel. Over the course of time it's meaning changed to a rooming house in England which led to it being referred to as a term for sleep.
In good old suppressed catholic Ireland however kips were dirty places where sinners went so over the course of time the meaning changed from brothel to a dirty place.

In Ulysses, Joyce uses it to refer to a brothel.
