Wolfsburg sign one of the UK's best FIFA(video game) players

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Wolfsburg sign one of the UK's best FIFA(video game) players

Postby JamieMCFC » Thu Feb 04, 2016 9:13 pm

Last year he represented England at the FIFA Interactive World Cup and has travelled to Las Vegas, New York and Rio de Janeiro to compete.

But he never thought he would get to play for an actual football club.
The 22-year-old signed for Bundesliga side Wolfsburg last month and reckons it won't be too long before we see Premier League clubs getting involved.

Speaking to Newsbeat, he says: "It's absolutely massive for me the fact that a team like Wolfsburg have gotten involved with gaming.
"It was just something I was doing at home to start with, just playing my friends and wanting to be the best out of them, and all of a sudden I'm a part of a football club."

So why are a big professional football team like Wolfsburg signing people like David to play FIFA?
He tells us: "It's a new market for them.

"E-sports is growing so much every year with all the viewers it's generating. Wolfsburg can see the potential and so they want to be the first to do it."
David can now claim to be an employee of Wolfsburg just like Julian Draxler, Dante and André Schürrle, but it doesn't necessarily mean that he'll be turning up for training every morning.

He says: "I wouldn't mind doing that, but at the moment I'm still living in sunny Wolverhampton.

"I wouldn't call it a training schedule, but I always try to get in at least four to six games in a day."

He says that he only plays a few games each day because "you have to play people around your own skill level".

"But you don't want to play too many people because then you give away your secrets. So you stick between one or two and then you have to wait for them to come online."

David says while his signing is not big news at the moment, in the future it might be seen as a turning point for FIFA gamers.

"Right now it's not exactly historic, but in five years' time when we look back at this we'll think, 'Wow they really started something here'.

"Less than a year, I hope, before the first Premier League team does this as well."

Because a football club made an economic decision to sign a gamer to do some kind of PR or simulation development with.

I think it's actually like a war games kind of thing too.

Watch all the game film you want but stick 2 of the best players in front of FIFA and I bet you're more likely to run through higher fidelity scenarios for tactical planning than any other method you could imagine.

I'm not making a funny comical event of this. I'm serious.

I love it.

Cheers

E-sports is the next big thing. Well done to Wolfsburg for acknowledging this and making the move. IMO city should do this asap.

I have to confess I've spent a lot of time on Twitch watching streams of gamers including e-Sports broadcasts - some of the most popular events can have in the hundreds of thousands of people online watching live.
Amazon bought Twitch a while back supposedly for a billion dollars and as part of their planned strategic move into streamed entertainment so they clearly see something in the potential for e-sports.

Ok. Now I'm depressed.
I am officially an old fart.

Excuse me lads, but that's not and never will be football. It's a computer game and may be the future, but it's not football.

Its good promotion of the club, E-Games are even being recommended for entry into the olympics!! Its the wy of the world, we need to found the Best Fifa/Cod player/Team on the planet and sign them up to wear City stuff. This thing has grown exponentially in the last 2 years. Sponsoring a team is a strange one, as Team Optic is one of the top teams in the world and they live in a house together, paid by the sponsors and they are constantly switching out players. So it would be a team we would need to sponsor rather than individuals

How does the business make money out of having him on the payroll? I don't get it. He plays online against other people, I get that much. Do Wolfsburg then charge people to watch them play against each other or make the matches available to be watched online and coin it in with the advertising content? Explain it to me.

My 8 year old son watches youtube vids of people playing other games, Minecraft, Star Wars, CoD, so it's possible I guess.

I agree with you but I'm not depressed, I can happily ignore grown people playing with toys and if someone is wasting their life playing Aguero Versus Zombies well so be it.

Its just like watching adverts on TV or advertising on billboards. It grows your brand, especially as this is the fastest growing "sport" in the world today. It is mainly for the younger element and therefore the market is massive for future growth if your brand is one of the big ones out there.

Made me spit out my tea.
"I used to be 6 foot 2 with curly hair, look what it's done to me"

"In my career so far it's the most important goal. You score the goal in the last minute to win the title. You're not sure if that's ever going to happen in your career again. I wish I could tell you how I did it but I can't. I thought for all the world that Mario was going to have a go himself but he just moved it on one more and it fell at my feet and I just thought: 'Hit the target, hit it as hard as you can and hit the target.' And it went in."

Having been addicted to the Football Manager franchise before I had kids & got other interests like wood fires & an obsession with cycling biographies I can see why you'd want success mirrored in a virtual world, but it'll never be at the expense of the real thing just another way of corporately conquering the market - are EA still one of our corporate sponsors? You'd have thought we'd have been up there with this. Taking it further what about paying to play virtually against the likes of Aguero etc
