Well, that was some result.
Media will harp on how the game was in the balance before the red, but I still felt Pep set things up well.
Yes, Salah caused Ottmanedi many problems, but you also saw how we were set up to cope with this (partially due to Salah not being such a great finisher). That one play where Stones as almost a sweeper came over to help, and certainly has not hurt that Ederson has been quite good at anticipating what's happening. NBC announcers commented on that one play saying it appeared we had worked on this (Salah blasting past Nico). We had numbers in the back and did well to counter their own counter.
Pep haters might want to take note.
Can say plenty of how overjoyed I was watching this, even against 10 men, because Liverpool coped extraordinarily poorly, and our play began to remind me of what we saw in preseason.
- KDB immense working his arse off even more so than we already see, looking to take the game by the stranglehold - critics take heed, I mean what a player
- Jesus/Kun partnership developing (I mean Sergo passing to Jesus for that goal made me smile as wide as ever...and you saw how overjoyed Jesus was...this is what they needed!)
- Mendy a freakin beast down the left with crosses Kola might even dream of, but with some kind of crazy Yaya left back-like style, with strength and pace. Oof. I think he might become the best left back in the game, and his personality is beyond mint.
- Stones with a world class performance as a defender, but also dictating play from the back.
- Sane to come off the bench to say "I'm heeeeere!!" Hello...what a bench we have. Bernardo didn't even play!
- Ederson, taking a true one for the team. Incredible bravery. I mean this guy is going to be one of the best, and worth every penny. What a difference from last season.
Like I wrote recently, the season is a marathon and this is a good way to get us back into the right mentality. Pep has some selection headaches that managers dream of. Gundogan and Yaya can't even get a game! No Sterling...our best scorer...no problem. Sane off the bench and Bernardo a no show.
Nico was concerning, but Pep, again set us up well. Danilo wasn't as effective, understandably, but he didn't do much wrong as far as I saw. Fernandinho had his best game this season as well, with that fantastic through ball, and smart defending (of course). I may be less worried about Vinny out than I ever thought I would, and I think it's fair to credit Pep with setting us up in a way that this was a bit less noticeable. Let the season begin...
