Great win tonight that allows us to rotate in the middle of so.e important games to come.

We were clinical tonight. After they could have had a penalty we responded brilliantly and scored 3 quick goals to take control of the tie.

As you said, we now have the opportunity to rest players in th second leg.

There were lots of excellent performances tonight, with Bernardo Silva and Gundogan particularly playing well. Delph made an excellent return to the side.

Only poor performances were from Kompany and Otamendi. For Kompany that was the usual level we’ve had from him for a couple of years, he should only be a backup player now. For Otamendi, he always seems to play worse when partnered with Kompany! His best form has been when partnered with Stones, but we need to give him some games with Laporte now so they can establish a partnership.

4-0 is a big win. happy with the result but the emphatic win does paper over some of the cracks.

but i gotta say that Otamendi was pretty shocking. he put in some of his old trademark lunges.
Kompany was okay defensively but his passing was so bad.

have to be worried that Basel, if they had better players, probably would've scored 3. if this was a match vs Bayern, for example, we probably wouldve lost.

Just as we miss chances. Guess what? So do other teams.

Ees normal. Ees football.

Vinnie and Otter having their first game back in a while. I'll let this one slide.

Exactly, if we're to play this could have game then we could have annihilated most opposition we've played this season.

As for our centre back pairing, they were fine, Kompany understandably a bit rusty but improved as the game went on. 6/10 for both, can do better but nothing to get on their backs about.

I thought Kompany reduced our passing accuracy if I'm honest. But made some good interceptions.

If all 4 are fit I think as a player he would be 4th. But has good value as leader. Will be interesting.

Merthyr Tydfil , look you , boyo.

0-4 away from home in UCL - but not at our best.

Lucky with the Tarka penalty , which was a silly challenge, and should have been given.
Several other wobbles at the back, which would have been punished by better sides, and some careless finishing. Half an hour for Foden would have been nice. I understand Pep wants to keep a sub up his sleeve with Vinny and Delph on the field, but 0-4 up with 30 mins to go - surely we've got enough to cope and give a kid a run ?

Their goalie definitely wasn't that bad -
1st goal , his near post man went walkabout
2nd goal - very clever weighted volley by Bernardinho - who is improving constantly and showing why we bought him.
3rd goal - unsighted by one of his own defenders - hence I thought Kun had missed by the way he didn't react.
Also put in a couple of good saves 2nd half.

this. definitely.

he did well defensively but his passing isnt up to the standards of this version of Pep's squad.
he was underhitting passes and misplacing passes alot last night and that disrupts the entire gameplan.

i expect him to not start league matches going forward

To get him back into the groove (injuries notwithstanding) the league games are probably the best ones to give him a run out now rather than any risks in one-off games.

i see that side of the coin. my argument stemmed from the notion that the league matches are more important (until we clinch the title). Kompany can play the wigan match and the basel 2nd leg as those should be easy for us (should be)

That is ridiculous!! He's done a great job for us, seeing as he's in his first season, he and Gundogan may not be in our best XI but they are great options and haven't let us down when called upon. The strength of our squad is unbelievable.

yes, the lads were in fine form , i know.

I had to leave straight after the game, to get up early and work in Germany , so no beers for me.

Wembley next week , i‘ll call in the debts ( beers ) .
