Jack Butland was in tears after Stoke’s relegation was confirmed by Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace. Tears of sadness but going by his comments after the match, tears of frustration too. “He inherited a squad where, unfortunately, there was ill‑discipline and players you cannot rely on,” he said, when asked about the manager, Paul Lambert. “I think the whole recruitment process needs looking at. There’s been transfers who aren’t even part of the squad for all kinds of reasons, whether it be discipline, lack of performance. Too many recent investments have been completely unused and that’s unacceptable. It’s been farcical really.” Butland said it was too early to discuss his future but there will be interest in one of the few Stoke players to look like they belong in the top flight. As for Stoke, the long road back starts now.

On a footballing point it is indeed mystifying.
When money is involved the transfer makes more sense.

It wasnt long ago we found out certain managers were signing the same players over and over for different clubs they'd moved to because they were getting a bung from their agent.

From a footballing perspective, it might be stupid, but he might be on a hefty wage. Seems Swansea will have to tighten the purse strings - a fair proportion of their adult fans are fairweather supporters who grew up supporting the Rags. I'm seeing plenty of announcements on my Facebook feed that people aren't going to pay £460 to renew their season tickets to watch Championship football. They were only half-filling an 11,000-seater stadium 15 years ago, and were only getting 13-17K in their first season in the Championship in 2008-09.

incredible at what? taking them down?
a couple of good results and some decent wise cracks at the start of his reign followed by an 8 game winless streak that has seen them relegated.

In fairness, if he wins today, he'll have a points average that - extrapolated over the season - would have seen Swansea finish in 9th place, less than half a point off Everton in 8th.
Although I agree with you about the winless run - should have easily picked up 3-5 more points from that lot than they did.
