These guys just have to tell the court that no one ever told them as a child that it was wrong to rape older women, and the judge would let them off and dismiss the case

Mendy back in court today, it appears there was a weeks break last week. Today it was legal submissions rather than trial, witness questioning etc....

The Athletic explains what has happened since the trial began on Monday, August 15.

Who have we heard from so far?

The court has now heard from 10 of the 13 complainants and Woman 11’s evidence began on Monday afternoon. The remaining complainants are in relation to allegations against Matturie.

Woman One has accused Mr Mendy of attempted rape, which is alleged to have taken place at the Manchester City defender’s house in October 2018.

It is alleged that having gone downstairs following a night out to ask for a phone charger, she went back to a bedroom to shower. Mendy, the court heard, walked into the bedroom, pulled her onto the bed and attempted to put his penis inside her vagina.

The defence says consensual sexual contact took place between them but they did not have sex.

Woman Two alleged vaginal rape, anal rape and oral rape all in relation to a single incident in October 2020. The complainant said Mendy had taken her phone off him at his house before going to his bedroom, where she thought he locked the door.

The defence says Woman Two performed oral sex on Mr Mendy but that no vaginal or anal sex took place.

Woman Three accused Mendy of sexual assault, dating back to an incident that is alleged to have taken place in January 2021.

While she walked past the Manchester City defender at his house, the prosecution says he grabbed her vagina and made a sexual gesture towards her. The defence, however, deny this happened and said he may have accidentally brushed against her leg with his arm.

Woman Four accused Mendy of raping her on July 23, 2021. She says he invited her downstairs at his house before allegedly forcing her to have sex with him. Mendy says it was consensual.

In relation to the cases against Mendy, the jury then heard from Woman Six, concerning an incident said to have occurred on the same night as Woman Four’s allegation.

Woman Six said she woke up to find Mendy penetrating her and that she had not given him consent. The defence argued the two of them had previously had sex and that she had visited his home on 11 different occasions.

The court next heard from Woman Seven, who accused both Mendy and Matturie of rape.

During her cross-examination, a film emerged of Woman Seven and Matturie having sex. Following a lengthy break, the jury were told to find both defendants not guilty on all counts relating to the complainant.

Woman Ten alleges she was raped twice by Mr Mendy and twice by Matturie on the same night.

The prosecution say the Manchester City defender raped her in his trophy room before she went downstairs to his cinema room, where she was allegedly raped by Matturie.

After leaving Mendy’s house and returning to Matturie’s flat in Manchester, it is said he raped her a second time.

The defence argue that all of the sex that took place between the co-defendants and Woman Ten was consensual.

Has the prosecution finished its case?

Not yet, no.

The jurors need to hear the rest of Woman 11’s evidence before they listen to Woman 12 and Woman 13.

Matturie

Woman 11 has accused Matturie of rape. Woman 12’s and Woman 13’s allegations date back several years, with Woman 12 accusing Matturie of rape between July 22, 2012, and August 30, 2012.

Woman 13 accused the 41-year-old of sexually assaulting her between September 30, 2016, and November 1, 2016.

What happens next?

Once the prosecution has finished, it will be the defence’s turn to try to prove Mendy and Matturie are not guilty.

The trial was scheduled to run for 15 weeks, which would have taken us up until the end of November, but it is likely to run for a little while yet, especially as there has been a three-weak adjournment.

Before they are sent away to deliberate and determine whether the co-defendants are guilty or not, the jurors will hear closing statements from the prosecution and defence.

How did we get here?

Mendy’s last appearance for City was in a 1-0 loss at Tottenham Hotspur on August 15, 2021.

Mendy was then charged with four counts of rape and a separate offence of sexual assault in August 2021. Those charges related to three women.

He was suspended by City and remanded in custody until he was freed on bail in January, under stringent conditions.

He had to live at his home address, observe a curfew and surrender his passport. He would also be subject to electronic monitoring and was forbidden from making contact with any of the complainants or witnesses.

The trial continues.

I know the legal profession are parasites sucking as much money out of as many as they can.
But Mendy will have died of old age before this is resolved.

I heard it from the start from a friend that works the prisons that he was innocent. He mentioned at the time that the girls were escorts and that just said it all for me.

Shame it’s allowed to happen really.

There's no need for anyone to apologise. He might be innocent, probably is.
Facts are he was so very foolish to put himself in a position where he could be so easily taken.

He will be keeping his trousers on now. Hard cruel life lesson learned.

No doubt he’s an idiot, but being foolish doesn’t mean you should have part of your life ruined and dragged through the media and courts as an already guilty rapist.

It would be foolish of a woman to walk down a dark alley at night on her own, but if she was raped we wouldn’t say, “hard cruel life lesson learned”.

Are you sure about that?
If a City supporter decked himself in sky blue, sang his way through Toxteth walking back to his hotel at midnight, after City knocked Liverpool out of the CL and he got beaten up, would we say "hard cruel life lesson learned".

Absolutely sure. You’re saying celebrating a win in a foolish way should mean you’re twated?

Ultimately though, your example wouldn’t ruin someone’s life personally and publicly. We’re talking about Mendy doing absolutely nothing wrong other than being a bit “foolish” and potentially having his life ruined. I’ve got a friend that came close to having it happen to him, hopefully it never happens to you.

I understand what you are saying Mase.
I have posted about the Paddy Jackson 'rape' case previously, he got an innocent verdict in court but still paid a very very heavy price for the false accusation afterwards despite being acquitted.
What I am trying to get across is that, sadly, people need to take every precaution to ensure they don't end up in that position. If they are careless or foolish then they are increasing their risk of a false charge. They need to be cognizant of this and act accordingly.

Pep’s turn to give evidence today (wonder if he wore his shit jumper to court) -

Asked to describe his character, Mr Guardiola said of Mr Mendy: “He’s a really good boy, I would say so generous.

"I think he is happy and I remember that when we were together and everybody asks for some favours and he was able to do it.”

Mr Guardiola was asked to slow down as people were making notes of his comments in court.

The witness said: “He’s a very generous boy. I think he very quickly adapted to the team and I would say he was very happy he could help the other ones.”

Mr Guardiola said that when someone asked Mr Mendy for something ‘he was always able to do it’.

Mr Guardiola added Mr Mendy was a ‘funny boy’, adding that the player’s ‘heart’ was always happier in the locker room rather than out on the pitch.

The City manager added that Mr Mendy liked ‘making rumours and having fun and making the people have fun’.

Mr Mendy was ‘definitely from day one’ a well-liked member of the team, Mr Guardiola said.

Mr Guardiola swears an oath to tell the truth.

Eleanor Laws KC, Mr Mendy’s barrister, asks the witness to confirm his name and asks his job. He says he is manager of Manchester City.

The witness tells the court this is his 7th season at the club.

Mr Guardiola confirmed he had come to court to give character evidence. He said he signed Mr Mendy in the 2017/18 season.

Ms Laws suggested that when Mr Mendy was signed there was ‘a lot of expectation on his shoulders’.

Mr Guardiola said: “I don’t know because I didn’t ask him what was his expectation but as a club and as a manager we have a lot of big expectations.

"We believed in our players.”

Pressed further, Mr Guardiola said: “He’s an exceptional player.”
