To play devil's advocate a bit, would a yellow and a penalty not be sufficient punishment or denying a clear goal scoring opportunity?

It's not just in the box mate. Johnny Evans in the 6-1, for example.
Blatter was mentioning this last year. I'm happy with the rule as it is.

No but whether someone was the last man is a clear factor in determining whether it's a clear 'goal scoring opportunity'.

If it's outside the box though, there's a stronger case for a red card as the goal scoring opportunity provided in a freekick is nowhere near as good as a penalty.

Nastasic was last man against Chelsea when he clearly fouled and only received a yellow with Maureen having kittens on side line because he was not sent off. The reason why, because he cannot have been deemed to have stopped a CLEAR goal scoring opportunity.

PENALTY No but in real time it did look like a penalty.

Exactly so both elements weren't there. It has to be
a.) a clear goal scoring opportunity and
b.) last man- or a position where nobody would have got there to cover.
Which is why DM's was a red card but Nastasic's wasn't.

B menas nothing, its just A and only A, forget B completely

If a player is last man and makes a foul it is a clear indicator (but there are exceptions) that this has prevented a clear goal scoring opportunity.
Nearly every red card for a non malicious foul will be a last man challenge.

I dont understand what you dont understand, FORGET the phrase "last man", it means nothing and is not mentioned in any rules, the only people that use it are stupid commentators. The only thing to concentrate on is whether it is a CLEAR goal scoring opportunity or not.
Last man is just a misnomer, there are lots of factors that could be used, however, people get hung up on the last man.
