Penalty and red card.

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Penalty and red card.

Postby Bridge'srightfoot » Wed Feb 19, 2014 10:41 am

After debate last night, we all know the rule is that a last man challenge in the box, which denies a clear goal scoring opportunity is a red card offence but is this too harsh?
To play devil's advocate a bit, would a yellow and a penalty not be sufficient punishment or denying a clear goal scoring opportunity?

Yes.

Should only be a red if it's outside the box or violent, & if it's a true goalscoring opportunity, the attacking team should be able to choose a pen, instead of a red card.

It's not just in the box mate. Johnny Evans in the 6-1, for example.

Blatter was mentioning this last year. I'm happy with the rule as it is.

If it's outside the box though, there's a stronger case for a red card as the goal scoring opportunity provided in a freekick is nowhere near as good as a penalty.

No but it kind of means 'last man' in that it's down to whether someone else would be able to cover the situation or not.

No but whether someone was the last man is a clear factor in determining whether it's a clear 'goal scoring opportunity'.

Nastasic was last man against Chelsea when he clearly fouled and only received a yellow with Maureen having kittens on side line because he was not sent off. The reason why, because he cannot have been deemed to have stopped a CLEAR goal scoring opportunity.

I know it's not as easy as this but like BRF suggests, foul in the box -> peno & yellow. foul outside the box -> FK & red.
So, sending Milner off at West Brom last season (?) was correct but sending off MD yesterday was a bit harsh.
but I'm not too bothered about this rule so I can live with the rule staying as it is

Yeah, but Nasty was in the middle of the pitch. This is a tricky rule, same as the handball one. To be fair, the spanish filth had a penalty last night in the first half at that handball from Clichy.

Exactly so both elements weren't there. It has to be
a.) a clear goal scoring opportunity and
b.) last man- or a position where nobody would have got there to cover.

Which is why DM's was a red card but Nastasic's wasn't.

I'm not sure what you're getting at here mate.
If a player is last man and makes a foul it is a clear indicator (but there are exceptions) that this has prevented a clear goal scoring opportunity.
Nearly every red card for a non malicious foul will be a last man challenge.

Messi would have scored but at least we wouldn't have had ten men for so long.

I dont understand what you dont understand, FORGET the phrase "last man", it means nothing and is not mentioned in any rules, the only people that use it are stupid commentators. The only thing to concentrate on is whether it is a CLEAR goal scoring opportunity or not.

Last man is just a misnomer, there are lots of factors that could be used, however, people get hung up on the last man.

and therefore is entirely exctraneous as WW is patiently trying to explain
Never criticise a man until you've walked a mile in his shoes.
That way when you do criticise him you'll be a mile away.
And you'll have his shoes.

Because it is usually a simple way of indicating the most important one. Yes it's not always a red if the 'last man' commits a foul, but it will ONLY EVER be a red for stopping a goalscoring opportunity if the defender committing the foul is the 'last man'. So it's the main factor in most situations when a player is fouled whilst running at goal.
