One or two more years of Chump's league group stage qualification and our ranking will soar - even if we dont make it out of the group (which seems unlikely given our virgin performance this season).

With a reasonable European run next season, and dependent on the Chelsea or Spurs qualification, it is reasonable to think we could and should overtake; Spurs, Roma, Seville, Hamburg, Werder Bremen and Villarreal. Dependent on how PSV do, we possibly get above them too. That would leap us to around the 21st placing from our present 28th.

Looking at the coefficient list,of the 27 clubs ahead of us, only 13 have qualified for the CL next season, 7 for the Euro league (Spurs/Chelsea may change that) and 6 have failed to qualify for either comp Chelsea/Spurs. A decent run will do us the World of good.

Another side effect of overtaking Spurs means we would qualify as Ordinary members of the ECA rather than Associated. We don't appear to have many friends, if any, at the top and the extra political muscle will help us.

next year, the points for 07-08 will drop out of the 5 year rolling totals.
We were not in Europe that year so we only lose 3.5 points. All the teams above us will lose many more points. Zenit, for example,
will lose 23 points. So we will make ground on them even if we don't do any better in Europe.

Assuming we do as 'well' as this year in the CL, we should make a big move up the rankings. The following year will be more difficult to move further as we will then be losing our 08-09 points (= 20 points for the EL quarter final).

Of course, this all assumes that we actually qualify for the CL in the first place (or is that sort of talk blocked by the admin team?).

There's another angle here that no one seems to be considering ... no, I'm not even going to entertain any ideas talking about not qualifying for champions league ... How about we win the CL next year, and that puts you right the top of Pot 1, simples :)

Pot 3 last year, Pot 2 almost guaranteed this year ... hello CL and hello Pot 1 next!

The whole shabang was organised by the big clubs, from the big countries, by coercing UeFA, to ensure they maximised their income. The fact that not only is this perversion linked to seedings, keeping the big clubs apart and allowing them an easier ride through each competition, it gets even more perverse when it comes to slicing the cake, to share out the TV money.

John, I'm totally aware of that, but at the same time eradicating the seeding would just allow it to move one step closer to a European Super League, in my opinion.

Even if City were to win it, we would only pick up the coefficient points on offer. Where that would leave us in the table would depend on the totals of the clubs around us. Much like the League table.

It can't be true - when Liverpool won but didnt qualify for the following season they entered in the qualifying rounds and not the group stage.

Thats because at that time there was no automatic qualification for the winner and it was the only way to get liverpool in. The rules were changed the following season and the winners now qualify automatically for the group stage in pot 1.

If chelsea wins today, they will be placed no1 on top of pot 1 for the draw ... that's the new rules. Whoever is the winner is top of pot 1 and then ret follows as per their coeffs!

And there you have it ... Chelsea will be top of Pot 1 being current Champions and the rest follow as per their coefficients ... all four English teams directly to the group stage, no one has to go through the qualifying round.

Spare a thought for Spurs who were third in the league for most of the season but ever since FA dragged their feet on England manager's appointment and the papers kept hyping up Harry for the job, screwed them up nicely in their dressing room.

So Tottenham, Liverpool and Newcastle go to Europa league ... does anyone know who takes Chelsea's FA cup spot in Europa league? Probably Liverpool as its a better round of entry being the FA cup runnerups ... and someone else will take that last Europa spot ...

latest seedings from Bert - just a couple of minor things left to settle but this is more or less it now

Chelsea are in Pot 1 by virtue of their coefficent ranking not as champions, had we won it we would still be in Pot 2

Nah.

'Arry was preening for the job from Day 1, Spuds would have finished about 7th without our player leading the line for them, and after the utter contempt they showed for the Europa this season, I'm thrilled they're back in it.

And I really hope it's Liverpool who has their summer ruined by the early Europa qualifier rather than Newcastle.

Even within Pot 1, Chelsea's name is placed at the top, above Barca and Scum ... whose coeffs are higher than Chelsea but the current title holders are always placed at the top of Pot 1 (so even if that Cyprus team had won this year, thats where they'd have been). Pls. read the official rules on UEFA.com instead of hearsay!

Does your position in each pot make a difference?

The groups are not seeded so does it really matter?

Point in debate is if we win it we'll still be in Pot 2, where as I am saying no, if we win we'll go straight to the top of the pile, that's Pot 1 ... New rules, UEFA.com, check the coefficients page.

So yeah doesn't matter where in Pot 1 you are placed but usually the pots are now made that title holder at the top, then next 7 by coeefficient in pot 1, and next 8 in pot 2 ... so it matter to the team who was perhaps 8th in pot 1, if someone with a lower coeff jumps in ... and that would same way effect the last on pot 2, and pot 3 as well as they'd get bumped down ... depending on where the title holder would normally have fallen!

AG7,
Why would anyone, other than a Spurs fan want to spare a thought for them? They finished where they deserved to finish and that in no way was the fault of the FA.

The only people who mentioned Twitchy for the England job, were the media. The FA made no utterances of anyone's name. If, as has been suggested, the affair affected affected Spurs form or Twitchy's ability to manage, why would that be the FA's fault. The FA run the national team and take responsibility for selecting the England manager not the newspapers or Talkshite.
