My First Visit to Eastlands

My First Visit to Eastlands

Postby trout man » Tue Apr 20, 2010 4:52 pm

Dont know where to start with this one...travelling alone and getting from Ireland to Manchester is a good place to start...it was a case of trains, boats and automobiles and lots of helpful and friendly Man City fans encountered on the way. It was amazing how helpful and friendly the travelling City fans were, including beers, directions, lifts and advice. I was due to fly out with Ryan air on sat morning and that statement needs no more further analysis; the chaos in the ports was unbelievable and it really showed how fragile our existence is and the things that we take for granted should never be viewed as such as its a house of cards.

Anyway, I eventually got to Manchester at 10.00am at the Holiday Inn at Central Park about a mile or two away from the ground where I was informed that they had no ticket for me (I was due to pick it up a reception) after what I had gone through (including a night in Holyhead) I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown. Panic stations and a few calls later and it turned out the ticket was in the hotel safe and only the manager had the combo and he wasnt there...about 11.30 I was handed the ticket and in fairness the staff couldnt do enough enough it was just one of those things, I thought I was going to have to travel the whole way over to watch the match in Mary Ds...(could have been worse).

Mary D's was electric and the craic was mighty, again the friendliness of the fans was excellent. It was then off to the match and a great seat on the second tier right on the half way line. Walking through the interior of the stadium and then seeing the ground for the first time was truly awesome and the anticipation I had for the game ahead was heightened beyond belief. It seemed most City fans were quietly confident that we would win this match and so was I, for once I let my 'typical City' guard down and allowed myself to be confident...hmmmmmm.

This is where things get a bit painful for me, I wanted to write this account because a few things struck me during and after the game that I hadnt expected, particularly on a derby day. I was disappointed that during a great majority of the match, the 3 or 4,000 scum fans outsang the City fans, I was amazed, particularly where I was sitting that it was really difficult to get a chant going or sustain a simple 'C'mon City', particularly when we needed it most in the second half. There were sections of the ground doing their best but I felt we should have had a sustained vocal support for the team throughout what was a tight game. It was apparent particularly in the second half that one goal was probably going to seperate the teams and I just felt the atmosphere was being dominated by the scum fans. I have been to big games at Maine Road during the 90's and the atmosphere was electric in comparison.

At the end of the game I just sat in my seat while the stadium emptied as I contemplated the defeat and I was emotionally shattered (in fact the stadium emptied and one of the stewards came across and asked me if I was ok, a dejected smile by me was sympathetically returned). I wanted to celebrate at least a goal at Eastlands but I genuinely hoped for goals and a win, I wondered about our mentality as fans and felt that during the match, particularly as the match wore on that we could have done more to rouse our team and silence those fuckers in the away area, maybe I am being over critical.

After the game I went to Mary D's for a pint and witnessed the lunatic fringe havin a wee handbag moment with a few coppers on horses and what appeared to be a few scum fans..nothing much to write home about. Just wonder why people take out their frustrations on the coppers (i'm no fan by the way) and their horses. Saw a few horses getting hit by stones and there was nothing else going on (just horse hitting)...strange behaviour but every club has them.

Didnt feel like socialising much that night but it was fairly obvious that most of the football fans in the City werent up for it either and I knew that getting back to Ireland was going to be a bit of a struggle (that is an understatement of grand proportions)

Anyway, got home a day late and sitting here reflecting on the weekend I can honestly say that City fans everywhere from Ireland to Wales to England and obviously Manchester are undoubtedly the friendliest and most helpful people. All my life being a City fan I have always believed we are generally good natured and realistic in our view of life and football, particularly being part of a small bunch of fans in Ireland. I was genuinely impressed by all the people I met over the weekend and the only thing I would change is the result of the match.

Good post mate.

I can relate to a lot of that chief... if you'd checked this site before you left, you'd have gotten a lift with us and drank all the way to Manchester..

The result was poxy and it was a tough trip, but you're bang on about the city fans, they're the best in the world when it comes to looking after each other.

Left my phone charger at home and phone packed up during the match (cant begin to tell you how much hassle that caused me), got your message when I got home and was gutted we didnt hook up. Despite the result I thoughly enjoyed the trip and hopefully we will meet up for another game, think I will just get a season ticket next season if business stays healthy.

great report mate, in hindsight im glad my flight was cancelled i was in OT for the 4.3 game i couldnt take another last min loss in my sitting room let alone being there.

What you reckon are the all in costs of having a season ticket?i can afford the ticket but its the travel im not sure of. I was thinking 19 home games all day trips at 100e a pop travel means 1900 plus the 500ish for the ticket means 2.5k. Anytime ive gone over theres been a decent bunch on the planes so am contemplating doing it(im also hoping my job will pay for my season ticket but thats another thing!),what are your thoughts on the cost element?

Great read pal, thanks - just a shame the bit in the middle wasn't better!

One of those that the actual traveling to get somewere really gives you an experiance to look back on, and although you wouldn't want the chaos again in a hurry, without it you wouldnt have met all the City fans you did meet on the way.

This bit reminded me of the last game at Maine Rd, so I can relate how gutted and exhausted mentally and physicaly you must have been:

At the end of the game I just sat in my seat while the stadium emptied

I suppose the liklihood of getting to all 19 games is remote (for me anyway) but I would imagine you are looking at about 70e for the flights and about 60e for bevvies and grub. Travel from the airpot to ground is also another cost so I guess realistically you are looking at 150e for the day plus cost per match of season ticket. Seat exchange may offer some clawback on the expense of the ticket but I suppose that is purely down to demand. It is strange but I talked to a lot of guys that had given up their season tickets due to the expense and found it more economically viable through the 'City Card' for individual games. I would like to spend the night in Manchester sometimes and you can get a room for around 45e for the night near the ground.

I suppose it really boils down to available funds in the end, if I get a season ticket I would be happy to 'share the love' with other City fans in Ireland so I guess a pooling of resources maybe the answer to cutting down on costs but no matter what way you look at, you would need about to invest about 1500 to 2000 per year to get over to a reasonable number of games.

It may sound a bit strange but I think I am better suited to going to away games or I need to be in the singing area of eastlands because I love the banter. I found it a bit quiet for my liking in the posh part of the ground.

ps this trip ended up costing me the guts of 800e anyway.....its a long story with unfortunately no lap dances or escort agencies involved

Stress Dazby, got my ticket out of the hotel safe at 11.30 and made a dash for the ground...I had little or no decorum or poise at that stage and it was a case of grab a few pints and get into the ground. I had a hospitality ticket but as i said I wasnt there for the refinement. Mary D's certainly ticked that box.

Hello Trout Man,
Good read, that. Done my own long distance travel for a short weekend so it reminded me of stuff I'll never forget and of some I wish I could. Don't like derbies, though, they're too tense, too filled with loathing for the rags on and off the pitch with their arrogant ways, so I prefer to visit for matches with a more cheerful atmosphere when 3 points are more assured. So think about making your next trip for a game early next season. A nice crisp autumn day, fly in with no problems, wander round the city, maybe do a side trip to Blackpool.

Agreed. I was stood next to them in Block 116 but I could hardly hear them.

My tuppence worth...

Enjoyed reading that Trout Man. Your trip sounds remarkably similar to my own (my first visit to Eastlands as well). I was meant to fly from Dublin to Manchester on Friday night but the flight was cancelled on Thursday. I thought my chance was gone but the car was made available and I got a spot on the ferry leaving Dub at 9.30. Arrived in Holyhead at about 12.30/1AM and drove on up to Manchester (only one red jersey against eight blues on the boat over - excluding my own). Checked into the hotel at 3.45 AM and was too tired to even finish the bottle of beer out of the fridge. Completely wrecked.

I was up early and decided to drive up to the ground to get my bearings for the walk later on. I probably shouldn't have bothered adding more stress to my morning but I couldn't resist. The sunny weather, the lack of sleep and the child-like excitement at seeing the ground for the first time nearly gave me a heart atack. I spent about £200 on 'stuff' in the City shop and made my way back. Still had plenty of time for breakfast in the end.

Walked down to Eastlands at about 11.45 and got a few beeps from fellow blues as they drove past. Still no red jerseys to be seen (you would see more in Dublin I thought to myself)

Like Trout, I was over on the East stand. Extreeeeeeeemly tense atmosphere and difficult to get a song going (I was getting a few looks when I was shouting), but jaysus, when the fuckers scored I just went numb.

I couldn't move for about ten minutes, and eventually, was one of the last to leave. Got shit faced that night to hide the misery and headed off to Holyhead at about 1PM the next day. Thought I'd be home at a reasonable time but then the ferry was cancelled and we were stuck in Holyhead over night. Got back on Monday afternoon in the end.

As I've been telling everyone since I got back, the whole weekend was an emotionaly draining experience but all it's done is give me a thirst for more... Hopefully next time I'll catch a Burnley perfromance!?
