International Managers

Postby Paul68 » Fri Feb 10, 2012 12:33 pm

Just wondered what the board thought of the idea of International managers being a part time job?
Is is feasible to manage a league team AND the international side?
Would prob have to be a prem manager as they get the week off before international matches,
But for the life of me I cannot see what the England manager does between matches, he gets the players maybe a week before the game so what does he do the rest of the time?
World cup is always in our off season so no probs with the manager going.

so why not manage prem team AND England?

or is this idea more bollox than chinners?
I wish there was a way to know you are in the good old days....before you've actually left them...

For 6 million a year i'd like to think he does a bit more than watch games and arrange a team. I think most of us could do that.

I agree though - id be interested to see what a day in the life of an england manager is like mid-domestic season.

Many other nations have part-time managers and training setups. Then again, the annual salary for 80-90% of the world's national team managers is less than the weekly pay of the England manager.

would there be conflict of interests though

ie Harry not picking any spurs players for friendlies whilst running the city contingent into the ground?

Think of ways to spend the £6m salary maybe?

They plan practices, scout players (esp younger guys on the way to break into the team), communicate with clubs, scout opposition, talk with FA to arrange practice matches etc.

More a manegerial position than coach.

Think Harry will miss tinkering with the squad and doing deals.

Think his team and spirit building will be a big plus, but that his tactical skills are abit on the low side. A good tactican assistant coach would help.

For the money being paid by the FA the manager should be full-time.

Conflict of interest is a good point too, that would effect Redknapp if he stays at Spurs and manages England on a part-time basis.

The solution will be that Pearce collects the cones and cleans the office until end of May, when Redknapp takes over after this season.

Isn't there a limit to how many players from one club have to be released for friendlies? I'm sure Baconface mooted such an idea 10-12 years ago, and what he says usually goes.

I suppose it depends which of the two the manager has more loyalty/ambition for. At a guess, I'd say Redknapp has more of both for England than Spurs, although I agree with comments above that he'd miss the 'tinkering' aspect of management.

Not sure if there is a maximum number of players per club but the clubs are now compensated

I don't think there would be the slightest problem if Harry, for instance, was to do that now, in the short term. He has people watching games for Spurs all the time & watches games himself in order to see the strength of the opposition, so he knows how the players are performing. Capello can only watch one or two games per week, same as Harry.

In the long term, there would be a conflict of interest, as he could pick players for England & be accused of over playing them in order to knacker them out & weaken his opponents, which the cunt would do (to us) whilst resting his mate Ferguson's rags.

It's so soon to the Euros that it's not a problem in the short term.

I can see the big clubs forcing a reduction on friendlies in the future so yes I think it could be done. Lets face it the england management position seems to turn previously able people into blobs of jelly so perhaps with less time to think about it all we might have a manager who DOESNT PLAY GERRARD AND LAMPARD TOGETHER and actually look for ways to mould a "team".

Managing an International team could be done part time - managing a (major) domestic team should always be fulltime.
