But we are definitely not as good as we were a couple of years ago. That’s a given. But I do think we still have the squad to win the PL and/or cup competitions. I don’t see that any of our rivals have better squads than us. Arguably Chelsea have as good as we have. Spurs have a decent forward line but their midfield and defence isn’t as strong. The dippers are about to be tested severely at the back. Arsenal are still a work in progress and have a soft underbelly. The rags are simply not good enough and have an idiot as manager. Leicester, surprisingly are dark horses and if they stay injury free like in 2016 could surprise us all.

It’s obvious we need to replace Aguero but that is easier said than done. There are literally a handful of guys in world football who are in the frame and as such getting one in isn’t straightforward. I really do think our management honestly thought we were bringing in Messi in the summer which would have bought us more time and as it didn’t happen we were kind of stuck with what we had. Maybe we could have bought a striker from somewhere, but if he wasn’t a prime target anyway then perhaps it wouldn’t be the best in the long run. Thinking of Bony here.

But it’s the manager who trains the squad. It’s the manager who decides the tactics. It’s the manager who picks the team. It’s the manager who reacts to the situation a game is in with substitutions. I would turn the OP question around and say yes we have got a decent squad, have we got the right manager for the squad we have or is the manager in decline?

There’s definitely a question mark against Pep but, for me, it’s more in terms of his contract. It’s very difficult to keep on winning everything season on season, especially, in my view, when you’re playing against the establishment. Saying that, when some can be disappointed with 2nd and a League Cup probably says more about our success that any failure.

Do I think Pep is right for us, then the answer is a resounding ‘Yes’, but it does come with caveats. If we are to continue playing against the same system every game, ie. a packed box who will just try to hit us on the break, then we need to see a different game from us. Maybe deception, playing deep ourselves to draw them out or even giving them more control of the game whilst trusting our defence.

But, this comes back to the whole team. If one players do well, the manager is vindicated.
In the words of my Old Man, "Life will never be the same without Man City, so get it in while you can".

For everyone saying all we need is a world class forward and midfielder. Do you see us buying them?

I genuinely don’t see us in the market for a top class striker anytime soon and feel this will be a drop on last season which was a drop on the two before. If we don’t readdress them squad in the off season it’s not looking great.

Ps I don’t think we’re going to become awful or slip away, but dropping year on year does show a decline to me. Last season we were a distant second and at this point in time I don’t see us challenging this season either.

With Pep we need a reset a spark. Goals FFS. Without Pep its a huge RESET. Nuts and Bolts the lot. I think we are in good shape all be it needing a big win to get us motoring the scousers are not in good shape are we going to cash in is the big question.

P.S Grealish would have been that spark..............

He was the only decent player for England on the pitch last night. Would swap him for Mahrez in a heartbeat

He is only going to get better, arrogant YES Show Pony at Times but he is a game changer. We need that.

The plonker spent over 400m to get the defence spot on. I'll dread to think how much he'll need to get the strikers right :?

I think if we click, we're magic, if things aren't oiled, we seem disjointed. They say half what you do as a top sportsperson is down mental strength. I think we lack that more than anything par some of the suicidal tactics. If he signs long term contract, it could make a huge difference and bring stability, I'm not holding my breath

Almost but he still has to sign a decent left back..so that will be another 60 million then.

Yes definitely - our recruitment since Pep and the spafia came along has been atrocious, we’ve had no Dave silvas, Kompanys, zabbas or yayas and we’re left with an ageing Aguero to remind of us of the good times

KDB is the only player in the team I would be arsed about leaving, the others can all go in my honest opinion

Was sorry to see Sane go.

Laporte, Jesus, Walker. Dias and Torres, early days but look good.

Good thread this, some balance posts that are always good to read.

We've now got the defence we've been crying out for bar left back and Cancelo has looked good there this season.
We're one more striker away from being back in my opinion. We'd certainly have beaten Leeds and West Ham which would have put us 4th 2pts behind Leicester with a game in hand.

My only issue so far is that from the outside it looks like we don't have a long term plan due to the whole situation with Pep.

For the moment we aren't a squad in decline, imho, but we can be if we don't find the best option when Baldie leaves.

Cancelo has looked surprisingly good, saw a stat that he has the most chances created by a defender per minute in the PL so far.

And Mbappe for Aguero.

Never going to happen, we rather spend £250m on dozen of unheard of players from across the continent and loan them out than buy a superstar that can transform us to next level.

As my Midfield thread ........
Midfield is a clusterfuck too slow and not enough world class wow there . Defence is looking as good as it has been for a long long time thankfully. Upfront we need another marquee or even 2 strikers with Aguero coming to the end . Not easy to get one Marquee striker never mind 2 but we have the financial clout and niche so it should be priority.
Not really here
