From the outside England did good, you had a great route, but you did not slip so I really think it was a progress reaching here.
But the penalties were a fiasco for you, not because of how it ended, but the moments before. I was telling my friend to look at how Mancini gathered all his players around, how Sirigu was talking with Donnarumna and how alone everyone was with you. Southgate looked lost, Kane didn't motivate the players at all, he looked more preoccupied about his own penalty rather than the rest.
There were a few moments when Trippier was trying something, but the rest were lost.
Mentally there is where you lost it, imho.

And about the tactics. Southgate did a Pearce (with James up front) or a Mike Bassett if you like. You played an really odd system that confused your opponents. It worked now, but it won't in the future.

If (IF) it is true that he selected the penalty takers based on training, then he should be a little bit smarter. Any idiot can take penalties in training, but you need experience and steel to take them in a massive game like that. Rashford yes, just that the dolt hit the post - it happens. Sancho - no. What on earth has he done to deserve to take that?

Saka - never gonna score in a month of Sundays. Everybody knew that and he'd just played crap, which can't help.

So yes he had a meticulous plan for penalties - just the wrong plan.

Pickford, though his all round game is pretty shit, is a good stopper and did his bit.

But as others have said, generally far too little attacking imagination shown. Grealish should have been on much earlier. Mancini got about 6 on before Southgate moved. Too happy to rely on the defensive 5/3 to carry the whole game, especially after the shock early goal.

Sancho isn’t even officially a rag player yet and they’re wheeling out the usual Rashford “he’s been racial abused on social media” excuse to deflect. Very raggy

We'd done the difficult bit with the early goal. Our defensive record was one goal conceded from a free kick that shouldn't have stood so the long ball tactic looking to get in behind for the second goal as opposed to protecting what we had was baffling. We have a fair few of the 11 with big game experience who should have calmed it and knocked the ball about taking the sting out of the game instead of just launching it forward. Let the Italians do the chasing. Lost track of how many times I shouted "ffs keep the ball".
Balotelli......that's a brilliant finish.

It was always going to pan out that way though wasn't it?and that's the most frustrating part. The two DM cannot hold the ball under pressure, neither of them are technically good enough. I sincerely hope Rice rocks up at the swamp as he is not the answer. Pissed off that we stuck to the plan, we git the early goal and he stuck instead of twisting to kill the game. The issue now is he will be heralded as some kind of genius and will still be around in qatar with the same gameplay

This 'racial abuse on social media' thing when someone has a bad game or plays crap. Does anyone know is it actually RACIAL or is it just people calling someone a cunt and threatening to burn the house down just because they miss a penalty or something?

Its the woke brigade. It will be people wanting to burn down his house. If it was someone who was gay, it would be homophobic abuse etc. Not excusing or condoning the abuse he will be getting. My take on it is that if someone is a tit, they are a tit regardless of skin colour, gender sexual preference doesn't make me a racist or homophobe

I aired my views after watching Italy's semi v Spain. The Spanish midfield was comfortable receiving the ball under pressure and didn't crack under the Italian press. I stated then that my concern was that Rice, Phillips and Mount would struggle with the same intensity. The strange thing is that we looked calmer after the equaliser and started playing the way we should have played at 1-0.

Some reports have shown examples of the abuse they've been getting since the match ended. It's explicitly racist.

So is getting called out for being white and privileged .

Both wrong but one gets far far far more exposure on public platforms than the other abuse .

Tired of it to be honest .
