When Everton played Manchester City on Saturday, the gestures of the players — and fans — were important and inspirational. But look up at the backers of those two clubs: Manchester City are owned by Sheikh Mansour, part of the ruling family of Abu Dhabi who run the UAE. His brothers include Mohammed bin Zayed, the effective ruler, Tahnoun bin Zayed, the UAE national security advisor and Abdullah bin Zayed, the minister of foreign affairs. And despite lobbying from US secretary of state Anthony Blinken to Abdullah bin Zayed last week, the UAE abstained from the vote condemning Russia at the United Nations security council last Friday. The UAE did however vote for a motion to censure Russia at the UN General Assembly on Wednesday evening.

It's a fair point to make, and to be fair to the reporter, the bare facts have been reported without opinion (in the bit you've shared anyway).

Most residents of UAE I know were pretty shocked. A few days later it seems to have became apparent what was going on. Over the weekend, Russia voted positively (after abstaining on many similar votes) regarding a resolution which will likely be the final nail in the coffin of the Houthis in Yemen.

UAE's abstention made zero difference to the outcome of the vote on Russia, as Russia were always going to veto it. However Russia's vote on Yemen is significant and surprising in terms of Middle-East conflicts, as historically Russia has aligned itself with the Shia countries / client states of Iran.

That kind of money could be useful to govt. Govt should just confiscate it and auction Chelsea off themselves.
We could build a couple of hospitals for that

He’s donating part of it to war victims apparently.

In his statement, he says he will not ask "for any loans to be repaid" and proceeds of the sale would be donated to war victims.

Could be quite clever wording that. He doesn’t say Ukrainian victims of war.

Exactly.
Russian 'victims' presumably.
Like all his countrymen, he is not to be trusted, ever.
He will give the money tot he Russian army to butcher and murder more 6 year old's in Ukraine and wider Europe when the real war breaks out.

I see the transparency statement on ownership of Premier League clubs from the government being the start of our ownership being in the spotlight in the not to distant future. Chelsea started the £$ trumps anything era. They are the first to feel the heat!!!!! Yank owned clubs will be exploiting and harbouring ways to bring us PSG down.

You’re saying no Russian person could ever be trusted? What about the people in Russia that are being arrested for protesting against the war?

I think it's a good idea to sell, but what I dislike are the vultures, most of all rags and criminals, asking for sanctions. Or even Real or Barcelona fans, one of them supported in the past by fucking Franco.
I will never support a cause that is also supported by those bent fucks, a bunch of hypocrites.
It's a sad to be a Chelsea fan and I can't help to think how will I feel if it was us.
At the smallest things, our board will be targeted and everything they did for the community will be erased (still I think it gets zero recognition when you always read about dirty oil money).

If Abramovich wavers the club debt of over £1 billion by not asking for the money to be paid back, how does this square with the FFP rules? Surely Chelsea as a club entity cannot be gifted this amount ? After all the shit we received and are still getting for our financial backing, i wonder what the UEFA view is?

Good point. It would be like Mansour “loaning” us £2bn and then saying in a few years, “keep that I’ll write it off”.

Of course it all depends on what that money was used for. It may not have been transfers.

That is a seriously good point. wtf How can they be suddenly gifted 1.5 billion

If the Spanish state did that for Real, or the Catalan Govt for Barcelona, everyone would be up in arms.

I hope your point gets legs - this cannot be allowed to happen

They will 'have to pay it back'....1 pound a month for the rest of eternity.

aren't the loans due to him from pre FFP times anyway? His initial cash injections from when he first took over? So if he doesn't ask for that back its no different to the money the sheik put into us pre FFP - he just classed them all as gifts from the off so have never sat in our accounts.

In recent years they've been self sufficient haven't they so waiving them has no impact on current finances

It’s like £2-3 billion. He didn’t spend that much pre-FFP surely? We’re not talking about £60m here and there. Prices were half that back then.

Usually what politicians do around Eastern Europe before going to jail.

Pretty much spot on - he's expecting to be sanctioned once all the UK cabinet members have sorted out their own personal financial/business interests in Russia.

Ah is that what it is? I did think that about couldn’t just be on players. As an owner he’s been great for them. They’ll struggle to find an owner that isn’t just out to make money, like most of the American owners.

My worry is another American buying Chelsea and more votes in their favour when they try to move against us (and now the geordies)
