Premier League Titles

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Premier League Titles

Postby Original Dub » Mon May 23, 2022 10:54 am

It used to annoy me when sky alluded to the Premier league era all the time, like football didn't exist before it, but I had to laugh when I saw a piece earlier mentioning that City are now the second most successful club in Premier league history.

United on 13
City on 6
Liverpool on 1

I had to send it on to my dipper mates

The fucking reaction was priceless, I'd highly recommend it

Nice to have passed Chelsea and be out on our own behind the red shite. Lets get them fuckers reeled in. Another title next season for three on the bounce would also be an achievement

So what is more important do you rekon ?

Total of titles won
or
Being current Champions

i'm going for current Champions by a country mile.
( cos total only becomes important when you are NOT current champions - doesn't it? )

Saw a villa fan spouting that they have the same # league titles as us. Which was true until Sunday but 5 of those came in the 19th century. Amazes me the sheer bollox people spout trying to make themselves relevant

At the Cup Final the other year they didn’t stop singing about winning a European Cup. They also brought inflatable CL trophies on Sunday. Absolute muppets.

They have won the title 7 times - 6 of them were over 100 years ago. Mental fanbase

Total titles. Leicester have won one but they're not close to being considered one of the top teams.

There is only one person left alive in the UK who could have witnessed Villa win 2 league championships.

Somewhere in between

And it depends on who it’s important to. A prospective player will be interested in our recent campaign(s). So for example as current champions they are more likely to choose us as we can offer a decent chance of silverware against say the rags or Arsenal. This can be extrapolated to about a decade or so, ie recent history. As this shows consistency. And with 6 titles in 11 years when only Chelsea have won 2 and the rags, dippers and Leicester trailing with one apiece, a player knows we are the best club and the most consistent

As match going fans and supporters in general anything much past living memory, perhaps the last 60 odd years as a guide, is largely irrelevant as it’s basically an era which is consigned to the history books

For example 7 of Arsenals titles were before 1955
5 of Everton’s 9 titles were pre WW2
5 of the dippers 19 were before 1948 and indeed it’s 1 in 32 years
6 of Villas 7 titles were pre WW1!
And all of Sunderland (6), Newcastle (4), Sheffield Wednesday (4) and Huddersfield (3) were pre WW2

Compare to our record of 6 in the last 11 years and even Chelsea (5) since 2005 and even the rags have 5 since then as well.

Football is a very different game now to pre war and even since the 1960s with the abolition of the minimum wage so is it fair to compare clubs from then to now? Imagine Villa and City going for a player and Villa saying they are only 1 title behind us? Laughable

And for attracting new fans and growing the clubs profile then what we have done prior to the last decade is for the most part irrelevant. Fans latch onto winners and those playing attractive football and teams who are entertaining scoring lots of goals. How much has our fan base increased over the last decade worldwide? The signing of Haaland will only increase this

The last point I’d make is for us to enjoy our time in the sun at the top of the league as none of us know how long it will last. Could be a year or do, it could be another decade or even two. This is our time, lets embrace that and drink it in

I was eight years old when we won the title in 1968 but I do remember it , I was there in 2012 , and again in 2014 when Pelligrini was manager Pep came to the premier league and changed it and raised the bar to be fair I have got to say Klopp has given us a good competition winning it again on Sunday was another day of mixed emotions for everyone on a par with 2012 . My question to you all which title win is the best one? You could say all of them but it’s got to be 2012 for me . Onwards and upwards City Quadruple next season please Senor Guardiola

It must be really sickening for the vermin to have us around.
I mean I saw a graphic today which said that the rags under the old bitter alco never got more than 91 points in any season where he won the league, i think 13 times.

The vermin have had three seasons finishing in the 90 point range and have ended up second.
The reason is us. Klopp only 1 title in 6 years, the reason is us.
No wonder they are so bitter, little old city denying them all their glory.

No imagine what we could do to them if we signed a striker, or two.

The first title under Mancini was the most important as it taught us as a club we can do it and we do belong and our project was vindicated

But I think my favourite was 2019. The treble. Unprecedented. Probably the pinnacle of what we have achieved thus far

For Liverpool the narrative is always different.
Coming second is a major achievement.
For us it is a failure.
We had a double last year and lost in the CL final.
Don't remember any of the media lauding us.
I do remember an unhealthy focus on our FA cup exit and CL final loss.

Think it was Shankly who coined the phrase “first is first, second is nowhere”

Rather poetically apt
