Macron (French P) just announced that France, Turkey and Greece are planning an "exceptional humanitarian operation" to evacuate civilians from Mariupol. Paris has been in contact with Mariupol's mayor and Macron will discuss this issue with Putin "in the coming hours”

As much to do with a Russian switch in focus as the stubborn resistance of the Ukrainian forces (though the latter has been forced by the former) - their emphasis is now on the Donbas rather than a shotgun 'attack everything' approach - they want a land bridge to Crimea and complete Russian control of the Sea of Azov (I think this is the minimum Putin will accept as a face saving peace negotiation - though Ukraine would have their own demands). If they think they can get this without taking the capital that's what they will do - and Ukraine needs to watch for their south eastern forces (their most battle-hardened troops) being encircled while Russia attempts to achieve it.
