kalvin phillips - what does he do?!

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

kalvin phillips - what does he do?!

Postby Nigels Tackle » Tue Jun 14, 2022 7:48 am

am i alone in thinking that he's massively over rated? surely, we need to be setting our sights higher than him??? also, he seems to be made of glass which is no good for a defensive midfielder. i'd be pretty disappointed if signed for us this summer.

His injury record is a concern but he has massive potential to develop under Pep.
At the moment he is a DM but has the ability to do much more with the ball in an attacking sense.
Like Grealish, he would have to serve his apprenticeship but there is a lot of potential with him.
Look at the way Rodri is developing season on season. Phillips would be similar imo.

I'd have preferred Bissouma.
He's off to Spuds for only 25 mill

He’s shite. Always injured and just launches balls from deep - not our style, even with Haaland.

Not gonna hang him out to dry just yet. Clips can be deceptive as they only show the good but in the one I watched yesterday, he looked pretty competent at pinging diagonal balls out wide. Not much else to go on I'm afraid but filling this position in the squad was always gonna be a tricky one.
Balotelli......that's a brilliant finish.

Yeah, the injury thing is an issue for me also. Would fit perfectly here with his injuries record to be fair.

But will he come to be a reserve? That's the question, he will play, but Rodri is numero uno.
Bissouma is a great shout.

He does nothing creative - passes sideways and backwards and gets injured.

A waste of time and money.

Im in this camp at the moment. Not seen too much of him though. Re the earlier comment on Rodri, Rodri already had the technical skill and had to learn the prem. We cannot teach the technique to Phillips. Its our key position so we cannot afford to fuck up.

Likely to be under far less pressure with us when he has the ball though. Look how our cb's stroll about with it..

From what I have seen of him, I wouldn’t have thought him a Pep/City player, that said only seen him on tv a few times and he never stood out as anything special

I think hes a decent player and for anything under 30m id be fine with it but i think we are going to spend big on him and i really dont see the need to pay big for a second choice defensive midfielder. He cant play any other position so hes next to useless then.

Id rather some portugeese kid for 20m or someone like that.

Think id rather james ward prowse too least he can play multiple positions and take free kicks!

Goes without saying if he signs i would back him and im sure he would be fine just dont feel like we need to overpay here. I hope its not to the expense of left back too. He will essentially be a modern fabian delph for us....
derby day the scores were level,
then the goat was fed by neville,
silly boy should know for sure,
feed the goat and he will score!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

First of all a 'replacement' for Fern is nigh on impossible. I cant think of any player in the world who could replace a prime Fern. That player just doesn't exist at the moment.
So is Philips good enough to be a back up to Rodri, who lets face it, if fit will play all the big games.
I think its an underwhelming signing.

Not for me

If we assume that we will continue to play one DM in the coming seasons and that if we also assume that Rodri will continue to be our first choice and certainly in the big games, then what is the point of spending big money on a guy who isn’t going to feature that much.

Plus I don’t think he is good enough for us which ultimately is what counts

I have always thought Bernado could step,in as a DM in games to give Rodri a rest. His energy is legendary and he can tackle as well. Not suggesting he plays at Anfield or Stamford Bridge, but more say a Bournemouth or Palace or Everton at home for example. A game where we expect to win and can rotate properly
