Rico Lewis only 17 looked sensational when he came on late last night.

I said it in the game thread- he's 2 years younger than the other academy kids there. Big things expected of this kid, right back as well.

Cameo appearance but looked different class . Why the fuck are we in for Cucarella when we have him and Wilson Esbrand or whatever his name is sorry pal . Both look top quality.

Given the worldwide scarcity of capable left backs, that's not a bad shout. Especially seeing Cancelo will probably nab first slot anyway

They may be great prospects but they lack experience, for the here and now and need to be eased in. Its not the 1990s, the modern game is full of scrutiny and in-depth analysis, a lot of it quite nasty deceitful and vindictive. I mean Lewis 17 he is too young in my book to be taking risks with him.
A few bad performances and or errors would most certainly lead to a barrage of abuse and criticism, and that's something that would set him back.

If they are good enough they will get there, if not they are Southampton bound.

Saw Wilson-Esbrand about a year ago playing for us in a cup game (?). I thought he was impressive then and it seems only injury has held him up.

They’ll only get that experience by actually playing.

Trust in Pep. Did a good job with Phil. And I think higher ups will want to see academy prospects coming thru

I agree, but to throw a young lad in and expect him to play 5 or 6 consecutive 90 mins + premier league games at full back.
We all know that won't be happening under the current regime.
Same path as Phil.

They don’t need to play 90+ mins every game. Cancelo is first choice LB, they can be back up and play cup games or, if Pep wants us to reduce injuries toward the end of the season and not have a repeat of the injuries we had last season - actually bring some of these kids on that deserve the opportunity when we’re 3 or 4 up.

Watford at the end of last season is a perfect example. We’re 5-1 up and he brings on Gundo, Ake and Mahrez. We have Palmer, Egan-Riley and Mbete on the bench. Why not just give them 10 mins? They deserve to be on the bench so why not play for a bit?

Totally agree.

But he will always bring seniors on first. Maybe its appearance bonuses or the fact they want game time.

Good point about the appearance bonus Nick. I think the players get “lower” salaries because they get add-ons per appearance. Might explain it to be fair.
