Brighton set their price (£50M) and stick to it. But for them this potential move is more complicated.
It is City and Pep who are calling. PR wise (for potential future signings) can they afford to block a player's progress and dream move? Presumably, Cucurella really wants the move? Then there is the Catalonian connection. Do they want a pissed off player with shattered dreams at training every day?
If City stump up £40M then their hand may be forced.
Thing is we need a LB asap so we have a different kind of pressure.
Interesting to follow this saga.

The same scenario happend when we were looking to buy a CB a few years ago and we were held to ransom and then we signed Ruben Dias from nowhere, the rest is history. I can see this situation being repeated with the LB situation.

Josh Wilson-Esbrand will come good in time, but he is only 19 and will need more experience at the top level (with the 1st team squad and in cup/lesser PL games). Hopefully he can stay injury free, which has hampered his progress in the last 18-24 months. I think we will still need to buy an experienced LB, either PL or top European league, for at least this season and maybe next. However, we shouldn't be held to ransom over Cucurella when there are better-value alternatives. JW-E will learn from whoever comes in, and from Pep and the coaches, and with luck will be our LB for years to come.

I'm pretty sure £40m will be offered and accepted - there may be add-ons too - think it'll happen C64 ;)

Yep, I reckon 40 mil, 45 with add ons. We'll then have 3 top full backs with JWE getting quite a few minutes and cup games i reckon. Rico has already swerved the Under 23s to train with the 1st team. He'll probably play some part of early Carabao Cup games but I reckon he'll really come into his own in a year or so.

And Cancelo's stats were a lot better this last season than the one before. It all bodes very well

Interesting if true as City have no intention on paying £50 million for him .

Whilst that may be the case, Brighton can hold out for a value of their choice unless he has s specigic £trigger in his contract?
All getting a bit silly this for me - lets move on. He will only want to go to Farca if he does rock up here..... .

We'll probably offer somewhere in the middle and get him as it's obvious we want him so if he's put in the transfer request I reckon it'll happen.
We've had plenty of Spanish players who haven't tried to move to Barca.

Yes, exactly, would be very risky for them to try to hold him now.

I'm glad to see that we're playing hardball and not simply handing over what they demand. This will stand to us in future negotiations.

Just get him signed so that I can pop him into my fantasy team and everybody's happy :)

Ermmm if he wants to move to Barca, he would demand a move to them now whilst he's relatively cheaper. Wouldn't make sense to move to us now then seek a move to them later when his price will likely to double. Barca can huff and puff as much as they want, they've never been able to swoop on our first teamers, Torres was never established, gimp was never going to be a regular starter in our defence, the only exception is Bernie, that's down to personal as suppose to footballing reasons.

Clearly he’s been told by them that if they get a decent offer he can go. He’s just had the balls to whack in a transfer request when they’ve not held their word - the opposite of Kane last year.

Smarts, balls and ruthlessness, you need all three or at least advisers who put your interests first and have all three.

Haaland moved to Dortmund because they were willing to insert a release clause. Supposedly turned down Utd because they refused to. Cashed in the release clause when it suited him. Demonstrated smarts, balls and ruthlessness.

Poor Harry.
No smarts - no release clause despite knowing he was dealing with a Cnut.
No balls, no ruthlessness - did not slap in a transfer request, did not cause trouble and be a complete cnut just like the complete cnut he was dealing with.

Harry, 29 now, looks like finishing his career without PL or CL winners medals. Maybe even no medals at all?
Haaland looks much better positioned to win both. No guarantees of course but he has a much better chance.

I write this because I still just cannot get my head around how thick Harry and his advisors were.
