On one hand we spunk What was it 40 odd mill on Mendy unproven in the prem and won’t go the extra for someone who has prem experience and although I don’t know to much about him by all accounts he is good. we all know L B has been and is an issue And yet we seem very non fussed about it

Apparently we’re in for Sergio Gomez. Here are his assists. Needs to defend too mind. La Masia graduate.

Seems we should have kept Zinch.

I like Cucurella and have wanted him. However, whilst I can make some sense of a 50m fee given the need and other economic factors I wrote extensively about on BM the other day, if you're going to overpay, maybe it's better when for players that makes more sense to take the risk by being either:
1. English/HG registered eligible - We know this is a requirement for PL/CL registration and a factor into why the fees for English HG players are always inflated for top PL clubs. Finding high quality players to fit our level is difficult, and adding English players helps with creditibility/reputation that we are seeking to improve in England.
2. More clearly seen as a either world class talent, or a viewed as a better bet to become a future world class calibre talent.
Does Cucurella as a massive overpay fit this profile? Not really, even if he is a very, very good player that we could use.
Look at the consequences we have seen for clubs that overpay too easily? That was us in the past, and now seems to be Chelsea following Utd's lead desperate to improve their squad to get back to prominence.
For example, Gvardiol, the young Croatian wonderkid defender from Leipzig whom we know top analysts hold in very high regard, and we've heard top clubs like Barca, Chelsea, Utd and us have been scouting closely for over a year. He will cost A LOT of money when he goes and is all but certain, baring some outlier events, at some point.
Gvardiol, played against us once in CL last season but I didn't recall him too much then. I watched some more Bundesliga games this season, and you can see why we'd be interested as we are hearing surface again, even if the fee may be A LOT.
If you see advanced statistics about his contribution to buildup play, and even if you just watch a good highlight video from last season
***just like none of us did when we "scouted" Alvarez when we learnt he was coming...![]()
***
You can tell that Gvardiol is a bit of a left sided (left footed) fusion of Cancelo's technical prowess - loves to get forward and cut inside, acting like a midfielder yet with less shooting - and the hybrid RB/CB that Walker plays on the right, both of which are exactly what Pep is looking for from the back line and is 100% seen as this type of player from what I understand and has been for longer.
I have a feeling this is what is going on with our transfer policy the past 2 summers, whilst still placing limits based on value.
If Kane was younger and Haaland was never going to be available, then maybe we pay what Levy wants. We passed and look what we got instead.
You can see why we are more ready to take this position because more and more players want to play for us than 5 years ago, and right now Spanish clubs are broke, and Bayern and Serie A can't hang.
