The client media are silent on the dire implications for Barca after the massive debts incurred thru' their failed big name signings. Word is they are struggling to avoid a catastrophic cashflow collapse without CL Knockout Stage revenues.
I read this morning that the TV revenues they sold were worth 6% of all broadcast revenues for this season. That was based on them getting to the last 8 of the CL, plus going who-knows-how-far in the domestic cup and supercoppa (where they play either 1 or 2 matches). As it's 25% of La Liga revenues, then CL + Domestic cups would have accounted for 76% of all TV revenues.
Now, as I understand it, the TV rights (market pool) for the CL are broken down in 2 ways:
50% goes on league position in the previous season (Barca get 30% of this 50% of the Spanish quota, i.e. 15% of a pre-set amount)
50% goes on the proportion of CL games of a country's clubs played by a particular team
So, Barca were counting on playing 10 games, but ended up playing 6. What also needs to be factored in is how far the remaining Spanish clubs go. With Sevilla and Atletico also out, this may not be as devastating for Barca as would have first appeared. However, it will massively widen the gap between them and Real on the domestic stage, as Real are basically going to hoover up more and more CL TV money in relation to the rest of the Spanish clubs due to their early exits.
Of course, prize money and matchday revenues (as well as sponsor-related contractual stipulations) will all be affected, too. But the fact that Barca's borrowing and selling relied heavily on them achieving their CL projection means they're in very dire straits indeed, with this season not even a third done. I reckon that by the time of the January window, they'll be trying to offload players left, right and centre, with some player contracts possibly being cancelled by mutual consent.
