Ederson - is he good enough?

Ederson - is he good enough?

Postby Sideshow Bob » Fri Jan 20, 2023 1:22 pm

he's never been the greatest shot stopper, but he seems to have gotten even worse this season. absolutely shocking v rags and spurs. does his (dubious) kicking/passing ability actually make up for it anymore? not for me. especially when he doesn't seem arsed after making mistakes.

Grealish, foden, cancelo and now ederson. Who's next for the boo boys this season? Get Richard Edgehill out of retirement.

A thorny one this.
He, like any player should not be immune from criticism where appropriate.

Yes, plenty good enough…he made a mistake last night as every single goalkeeper on the planet does. He has more assists than half the outfield players in the PL.

Difficult is this, he definitely fucks up, what player doesn’t, his distribution is usually very good, however he should not be exempt from criticism, thing is, we have nobody better, so best just carry on with him

Made some class saves against the Rags. If we go back through match threads you’ll find more “thank fuck for Ed” than “ffs Ed”.

He’s fine. He fucked up last night but he’s a decent shot stopper, despite what people think on here, and his distribution is (usually) top notch.

Play a settled defence in front of him.

As a gk? No.
As part of our system - quite decent.

But ultimately I don't think that is enough. I am shitting my pants when we are under pressure because he doesn't inspire trust. He seems an accident waiting to happen. His first season here he was briliant, but after that I feel he stood still, never progressed. Having piss poor competition did not help at all.
And his penalty skills are poor.

If we want him out, we need someone to step in.
And I don't know a world class shot stopper that good with his feet and his name is not Neuer.

I think Eddies biggest flaw is that he is complacent.

We should be looking for his replacement or looking to train into a youngster what he has. I have never been his biggest fan as a GK but he is without doubt the best for our system .

Short answer yes. Perfectly fair to have a pop in the match thread if anyone fucks up. The problem is to airbrush out what they’ve previously done and decide they’re shit and should be sold.

I believe James Trafford on loan at Bolton is being lined up as future replacement?

Yes he is excellent for the way Pep wants to play.
A hybrid between a GK and an outfield player.
Fits our system perfectly.

The required GK skill set depends on the manager.
Ten Bob wants to do the same at the Rags.
De Gea is an excellent shot stopper but is not good on the ball.
He will be turfed out as soon as Ten Bob can organize it.

Get the defence settled Pep. Rotate all you want midfield / forward role but settle the defence best you can (injuries aside).

He looks bored to me. Even before the goal he took up some odd positions. Just needs fire in his belly too and he will be fine. He is more than good enough, thats not even in question. He just needs to be motivated as do a few of the others.
derby day the scores were level,
then the goat was fed by neville,
silly boy should know for sure,
feed the goat and he will score!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Excellent sweeper keeper. Not a great shot stopper and not great on corners. But he's the best we've had since Tony Coton for me.

That's a topic all to itself. How far back do we have to go before we get to a keeper we would put in the team instead of Ed?

I think Bravo was better at penos than Ed ffs.

He's here for his distribution and occasional shot stopping. We're playing the percentages at the back and when we're on form, he's largely doing nothing.

Put it this way, he gets far less shot stopping practice during a game than any other keeper in the league so it's bound to hamper that end of things as well.
