Chelsea have been accused of using long-term contracts to cheat the Premier League’s Financial Fair Play rules.

According to FIFA statutes, clubs are only permitted to give players contracts of up to five years, but Chelsea have been routinely handing out far longer deals this season.

Ukraine winger Mykhailo Mudryk signed for eight-and-a-half years and French defender Benoit Badiashile for six-and-a-half years this month, after the arrivals of Wesley Fofana and Marc Cucurella on seven- and six-year deals respectively last summer.

For FFP spending the transfer fee is amortised by the length of the contract. So a £88m fee over a 8 year contract works out at £11m in the current financial year whereas a 5 year contract would be £17.6m charge.

Of course this is very risky longer term as they may have players on long contracts they can't shift and it could limit their spending in future years as all the previous years amortisation are added up.

They are effectively betting short term and it could/likely come back to haunt them

Merseyside Police arrested three men for alleged homophobic chanting during Liverpool's draw with Chelsea.

One was arrested inside Anfield and two outside the ground for three separate incidents on Saturday.

The men, aged 23, 37 and 49, were arrested on suspicion of homophobic intentional harassment, alarm or distress.

The 37-year-old has been bailed pending further enquiries, and the other two men will attend a voluntary interview.

It makes sense that there will be a lot of movement this Summer.
Pep's public statements on lack of desire, the age profile of some players, lack of game time, playing in and for a Pep team, past success blunts desire, length of time with the club, etc...
I think the refresh started this Summer with established players leaving. For ex, Jesus and Zinch wanted a change, Sterling had lost his desire, etc...
Look at the starting 11 Vs. Wolves. Has to be a lot of unhappy bunnies on the bench. Experienced bunnies who have won lots and now cannot find the drive to keep going. Understandable imo.

Silva can go for me. Not focused to the level we require this season and this is the chance to get good money for him
Cancelo as well. Not a dependable defender and his attacking prowess has taken a massive hit recently. He has the potential to be a bigger liability than a game changer. Sell him whilst his stock is still good
Gundogan has been a great player for us. But age is not his or our friend. Can understand why he would want to go to Barca this summer as it’s a decent chance for a good contract. He could get offered 3 years there whereas we would likely only offer one year and the opportunity might not be there the following season

Of course there will be lots of factors which go to dictating player turnaround, not least the recruitment side. Before letting players go we need to ensure they are adequately replaced otherwise we have a depleted squad. The emergence of Lewis limits the opportunities offered to Cancelo for example. Can’t see how he plays RB for us any more.

Maybe there’s another Academy lad who will break through? Borges? Maybe a couple of the lads currently out on loan? Time will tell.

But I reckon this will be a summer window with a bit more activity than in recent years. I believe we need to reinvigorate and freshen up the current squad. The performances lately which culminated in the interview Pep gave, are testament to that.

And maybe there might be a surprise exit, someone who we wouldn’t have considered

I think Laporte will be looking to find a new place to play regular football, I think Madrid who need center backs. I think Farsa are out of the question.
He was linked the past years with a transfer, so who knows.
Cancelo looks like he felt of a wagon this season.

I would keep Bernie only if he drops his bird and moves in with Stones.
