The new 'optimistic' points prediction thread!

Postby john@staustell » Mon Mar 01, 2010 8:48 am

Now that the team have shown something none of us actually believed they could do, I reckon some of those points predictions last week for our remaining games were a bit pessimistic. I even thought so at the time. Another point worth noting is that after we've been to Fulham, we will have 3 away games remaining and SIX home games (inc Spuds and Scouse 2). So after any away disasters in the meantime we should take this into account.

I'm still very confident we can pull through into 4th. It looks tight now but I believe the other 3 clubs will 'slip up' far more than us.

Sunderland A Win
Fulham A Draw
Wigan H Win
Burnley A Win
Brum H Win
Scum H Win
Arsenal A Loss (but who can be sure now eh?)
Villa H Draw
West Ham A Win (cos it's the last day and they'll be safe)

Spuds H Win
Scouse 2 H Win

26 taking us to 75, and I reckon even with a couple more draws sneaked in we should do it.

Maximum points

Chelsea 91
Scum 90
Arse 88
Spuds 79
CITY 82
Scouse 78
Villa 81

Of course teams have to play each other

Chelsea: Villa (H), Scum (A), Spuds (A), Scouse (A). Lets say they get a home win and three away draws.
Scum: Scouse (H), Chelsea (H), CITY (A), Spuds (H). Let's say two home draws, home win against Spuds, WE WIN (Cmon CITY)
Arse: Spuds (A), CITY (H) Lets say they beat Spuds and we get a draw.
Spuds: Arse (H), Chelsea (H), Scum (A) CITY (A), I'll give them a draw against Chelsea
CITY: Scum (H), Villa (H), Arse (A), Spuds (H) A draw against Arse win the rest.
Scouse: Scum (a), Chelsea (H), Two draws.
Villa: Chelsea (A), CITY (A) Nothing there.

A couple of assumptions: first, I've not missed any fixtures, and second all the "lower" teams get beat (dodgy I know, but let's go with it)

Now the new, revised maximum points
Chelsea 85
Scum 83
Arse 86
Spuds 68
CITY 80
Scouse 74
Villa 75

So, do the business and we'll get fourth with ease. If any of the top 3 slip up against, say Birmingham or one of those fighting a relegation battle, then we could go higher.

Our fate is very much in our hands.

To those who say I'm being a ridiculously optimistic dreamer who has lost a grip on reality. Be honest, what do you think has kept me supporting City over the last few decades?

Oh and..

I think a minimum of 11 points from those next five games is essential if we're going to stay in the hunt. It doesn't matter where and when we get those points as we're not in direct competition with any of those five teams. This give us an unmissable opportunity to build up a good head of steam before the toughies.

I thought this was the "optimistic" thread. You've got us down as winning 16 points from the remaining 11 games at an average of 1.45 points per game. So far this season we've picked up an average of 1.81 points per game. What makes you think we'll tail off so badly having just won the hardest fixture of this or any other Premier League season? Pessimist!

we keep forgetting Everton don't we?
The Chelsea game was the first of 8 we have to play against other top ten sides.
Plus we have to play 2 sides that we could only draw with earlier in the season and 2 we beat, but we beat at home.

It's a difficult run in for sure, and you could argue that there's a load of potential draws. I guess that's what we're looking to mancio to change.

I fancy the Mancini style will do for our old bogey team, Spuds. We should be able to bore them to death whilst striking against their piss poor defence with our counter-attacks. That is one game where I think the Les-style all-attack would've seen us wide open to them, but now I think we'll do them at home.

25 taking us to 74, anyones guess whether it'll be enough but think the face we'll take 3 pts of Villa and Spuds should see us through.

Fulham away these days is a really difficult game, and since Hodgson's come in they've done well against us. But look at their run of games before facing us- Spurs at home, Juventus away, Rags away, Juventus at home and then us only three days after. In contrast, we only have to play Sunderland between now and then and obviously their squad is a lot smaller.

I'm cautiously optimistic but really feel there's maximum points there for us in March and early April. The end of the season is a very tough one and that's when our character will be severely tested. The next five games, under the circumstances, we should be winning, no questions asked, if we're serious about that top four finish.

Sunderland- Win
Fulham- Win
Wigan- Win

Burnley- Win
Birmingham- Win
Rags- Lose
Arsenal- Lose

Villa- Win
West Ham- Draw

Everton- Win
Spurs- Draw

That's 23 points to leave us with a finish of 72. Should be enough for 4th place.

No losses from here to the end of the season, all wins besides a draw at Emirates. You said you wanted to be optimistic, after all.
