Peps last season?

Postby nottsblue » Mon May 27, 2024 12:00 pm

A lot of talk in the media about the next season possibly being his last with us. Possibly stemming from his interview after winning the PL where he was saying the season was hard with motivation.

At some point he will obviously call it a day, but as we've seen with other clubs, it isn't usually a good thing for the players to know a lot of time in advance. Indeed, we ourselves saw this in the last month's of Pellegrini's tenure.

Would it simply not be better to announce he has signed a new contract with the provisio that if he wants to go next summer he can? Then the media won't be printing article after article about it and all the pressers won't lead with the "are you staying" questions.

Then at the end of the season announce the departure if that's the case. Or simply carry on if not

Nothing should have been said IMO - he and the club should have kept quiet as I don’t think most players will have the same motivation imo - look what happened to the bin dippers !

Anyway - I’m all for a transitional period bedding in new players and allowing the Rico Lewis’s and Bobby’s of the set up play more and if that’s at the cost of winning the prem then so be it .

Whatever players he does buy then they will obviously be players the incoming manager would probably want as well.

No issues at all here.
We can replace him with keyboard critics whopost on this site who know more about football management and tactics than he ever has.

I’ll be gutted when Pep leaves, but also really excited for what awaits us going forward.

Would be over the moon if he signs an extension, but equally I’m eager to see what the club has planned for us next.

Well said. I don’t know about you I still get frustrated when days like Saturday happen. It was Spursey from minute 1 and we fell for it…. Again. Ruined my summer pep.

Would you give him 1-2 sabatical years, let Lillo or another one in charge and then have him again for another 7 years?

I think I would.

Agree with you both. We need to move on once he’s done.

Would fans rather we spent £100m on Bruno from Newcastle or give Pep £100m for 5 more years?

When you think that Pep is just as important as any player, it’s a weird question.

If it meant Pep stayed and had the same motivation he does now, then it’s a Hell yes from me

I'm amazed he stayed so long. When I spent a large part of my life thinking there was no hope of us winning the league, or anything else for that matter, ever again, I'm just grateful for what we've had.

Dragging my eldest up and down the country twice a week, watching the dross served up by Alan Ball and Frank Clark we certainly served our time and eventually got rewarded.

Everything moves on. Hopefully Masters gets his come uppance before Pep leaves. Much like Platini did, everyone seems to forget. The original City hater

Wonder if the uncertainty around Pep renewing his contract is fuelling the rumours about this summer being one where we aren’t going to be very active in the transfer market?

Hopefully it is simply rumours and not anything substantial but we are likely to be starting a period of transition and rebuild with a number of players nearing the end of their contracts.

Be an interesting summer either way

I would rather buy a few now and play under Pep, than a shitload next summer.

100% agreed. There's no way I can see the club allowing the club to be exposed to the risk of a major rebuild AND change of manager at the same time.

That's not the way these guys roll, there will be succession planning in place for the every player and the manager, and even if we can't get our preferred Gundo/KDB/Bernardo long term replacements this summer, we will move on to 2nd on the list and keep going until we get one.

What we do now sets us up for the next 3-5 years, and I just don't see a scenario where the club would leave these things to run another year - I think we're going to see a lot of movement in late July, some perhaps surprising exits and big incomings.
