Rico Lewis - what's next?

Rico Lewis - what's next?

Postby PeterParker » Sun Mar 02, 2025 12:21 pm

Lately we've had a lot of arguments about him and if he is good enough or not.

Discuss.

I have no opinion, rather than he was used in so many positions he is very lost out there and it seems he needs to settle somewhere to see if he is good enough or not.

He seems to suffer from being a makeshift full back, a la Pep.
To slow and too vertically challenged for that position.
A decent run in central midfield would show what he's capable of.

He’s been made to play in positions he just cannot perform well in - pep does this with so many players and persists with this strategy as he cannot improve every fucking player that signs on for us - some players he should just fucking let them play their natural positions.

Unfortunately he's not going to fulfill his potential with us as long as Pep is here. He's not a fullback. Too many ahead of him in the middle. I hope he goes in the summer to a top club and flourishes in midfield.

He is increasingly looking like a guy who can fill in a number of positions but isn’t good enough to be the first choice in them. He isn’t an outright FB and he isn’t good enough in midfield as a 6 or 8 to be the first choice

He is a squad player. Which is fine because every team needs those. Whether he will be happy with that role remains to be seen. And whether this actually may be on Pep as his penchant for turning the full backs inverted and having them play different roles may have stunted his natural development. It’s arguably worked well with Stones as he’s older and more experienced and has learned his craft and he is therefore more able to adapt

Someone said on here that he came all the way through the system as a right back, so if that's right it isn't a Pep experiment.

I do think he's got messed up by being also in midfield. But he isn't any good at right back, too small, too slow and poor position. It would help in midfield if he scored occasionally instead of blazing over every single time.

Him and McAtee off to Burnley next season

The two of them would be great at Burnley. I stand corrected on Lewis if he played right back underage then hes just not going to be at the elite level. I always thought he played defensive midfield at 16 and 17 years of age for some reason and was touted as the next big thing but I must be getting mixed up.

I just do not think he is a natural defender, he just doesn't see the danger instinctively.
Not sure what his future is, he has time. To me now he looks a James Milner type, jack of all trades, master of none.

The only position he has been asked to play in , different from normal as right back or right midfield, is left back. Pardon the pun, but he comes up short most of the time. Not good enough for this modern City.

He’s fine in a Zinchenko style role if things are going f well. He’s not able to lift us out the shit and keep clean sheets in the biggest games. Home grown and seems a decent lad, he’ll just never be first 11 for me.

Scored the equaliser against Palace away this season. Just an example.

Maybe he’s 20 and part of the shittest team we’ve had in be last 6 years. Probably should judge him when the team is playing well.

The kids 20 and has already scored as many PL goals as the supposed best right back ever in Kyle Walker and not far behind on assists.
He started the season really well, only had a dip when Walker came back in the frame. He's obviously had a loss of confidence but always shows up, always available for the ball and very rarely gives it away.

Spot on. There’s a video of his highlights from the start of the season at RB on YouTube. He’s spot on and it was only when Walker, like you say, was forced back in. He’s probably another that needs to play regularly instead of in out in out in out.

Pep always wants the fbs to play inside which is ok when we are dominating possession and have a propr dcm sat to pick up the danger. Lewis has suffered more than most with our setup since we lost Rodders and constantly finds himself surrounded when he steps out. He needs to work on his running down blind alleys which is a theme with him but he shows constantly for the ball and does not go hiding like a fuck load of his more experienced teammates

Pep likes big, powerful full backs. Walker, Gvardiol, O'Reilly for example, even though the last two weren't/aren't
