Can we talk about our physio team?

Postby PeterParker » Sat Sep 13, 2025 8:52 am

Came across an interesting stat:
Rayan Aït-Nouri
Five weeks injured across five seasons at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Five weeks injured already in his first season at Manchester City.

Last season we struggled badly with injuries, and under Pep the issue has often been a recurring theme, the list has been painfully long at times. Lorenzo Buenaventura has been part of the setup since Pep arrived, while Richard Bitcon has been around since the takeover.

It all reminds me of what happened at Bayern. The infamous “Pep vs. Bayern doctor scandal” in 2015 saw Pep clash with Hans-Wilhelm Müller-Wohlfahrt, the legendary club doctor. Their relationship broke down completely, with Müller-Wohlfahrt resigning after accusing Guardiola of interfering in medical matters, prioritising quick pain relief over proper recovery, and ultimately putting players at risk of recurring injuries. That fallout sparked a wider debate about the tension between a coach’s demand for immediate availability and a doctor’s duty to ensure long-term player health.

So, wtf is happening?

Simple answer is No. Injuries remain a part of the game. Some seasons we get off lightly other seasons we dont. No conspiracy theories needed. There is no way that Pep is overruling the medical staff there would be serious consequences and the medical staff would fuck off

Agreed SC.

Injuries have always been part and parcel of the game and always will be.

However, I'm absolutely convinced modern boots lead to more injuries than older style boots. They are like slippers in comparison and have little protection in tackles. As an analogy you wouldn't wear slip on shoes on a building site, you'd wear proper boots in case bricks or other building materials fell on your feet.

Yep, but what if they aren't good enough?
Or their program is not working?

We have just seen an unprecedented period of success. You've already stated that our medical team have been there throughout? Stop looking for problems that aren't there. Some of our shithouses who seem to cry off at the slightest knock need to take a fucking look at themselves.

We’re on a bad run right now.

Some of the long term injuries though would surely come down to overplaying. Aguero, KDB, Rodri etc were playing 50-60 games a season then going on to internationals after and in between the season. Success plays a part.
Tracking back is overrated.

Back in the 80s, those leather boots we all wore gave us solid protection when you took a proper whack on the foot—thicker material meant it could absorb a decent hit. But fast forward to later years and the tech in today's designs, with all the fancy cushioning and lightweight builds, gives way better overall protection. You're less likely to pick up niggling injuries, apparently !!, and they’re made to keep you quick and stable.

I think players have far more injuries in other areas than in their feet,,thigh muscles, knees etc

The manager has ZERO fucking excuses this season and if we lose tomorrow he can pack up and fuck off.

The feet and ankles is where I think modern boots aren't as good. Who had ever heard of a metatarsal 20 years ago other than a doctor? And there's very little protection round the ankles on modern boots. Yes they are lighter and more dynamic, but I'm not convinced they give better protection.

I of course stand to be corrected by people far more qualified than me on the subject.

But it appears to the casual observer there are more niggles and injuries than there used to be. Maybe players don't play through the pain barrier like they perhaps once did? In the days of one sub and small squads there wasn't much rotation so if you lost your place to injury you might struggle to regain it? Cortisone injections were common place but they had side effects in later life so maybe players are suspicious of such painkillers these days?

What's our success have to do with our players getting constantly injured?

During that period we had our share of injuries. Might have to do with a poor recovery regime, or more prone players, but it's a fact out there. Not saying is Pep, even if there is a precedent with him and his staff, but I can't remember Salah missing a game with us, juices or not.

I can honestly see us losing the next three games. Rags Napoli and Arsenal are three tough fixtures
