1965-66...FA CUP v Everton.
It was the 1st season of the Mercer/Allison era and we were in the 2nd Division (old). We were pushing near the top in the League and going for promotion. We knew we were a good team but had no clue how good and needed a measure.

In R3 we were drawn away versus 1st Division Blackpool and got a 1-1 draw, crossan scoring. In the midweek replay, over 52,000 turned up to see us punch above our weight and win 3-1.
In R4 we got Grimsby at Maine Rd...comfortable 2-0 win
In R5 1st Division Leicester, wirth Gordon Banks in goal were 2-0 up at half time. A crowd of 56.000 saw nelly young score two incredible goals to draw the game. At Filbert St. Our coach windows were put in on the way. Several Leicester fans were put into the canal as revenge...:-) and Nelly Young scored our winner.

R6, and we had Everton who were giants at that time and I think went on to win the Cup. We matched them stride for stride and ended 0-0 at Maine Rd in front of 66,000. At Goodison, it was just a nail biting and agin we matched them again 0-0. A 2nd replay at Molyneux was superb. We were every bit as good as them but unable to stop Derek (Shirley)Temple from scoring twice. We lost but on the way home, every City fan knew we had made it and that City were special...2 years later, we found out how special.

Against one of the biggest clubs in English football at that time...and with no Bell, Book, Lee, Coleman or Mulhearn, our team sweated blood for us that night....and we were disappointed but proud as fuck.

Last game on the Maine Road. Felt that result didn't mean much and I thought it was such classic case of 'typical City' to lose meaningless game to Southampton whereas for us it would've been a big deal that I had a wry smile for few seconds in my face.

Other than that, I hate losing and find little comfort on 'good performance', ' exciting game' and shit like that.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Losing 1-0 to Bolton at home under Pearce. We hit the woodwork 6 times. It was becoming almost laughtable. Then they go up the park and get a penalty in injury time and win the game. It was a classic example of how dramatic and cruel football can be.

We were on a decent run at the time but had won a bunch of game in a boring 1-0 fashion. I strangely came away from the Bolton came highly entertained at least.

Newcastle away. The 4.3 one when Bellamy scored for them right at the end.

Gotta go with the 4-3 at St James, with Shauny running riot. The swamp 4-3 was a fucking superb game, easily the best game this season, but the result stung too much to be my favourite.

I can't remember anything about the Newcastle game at all. Racking my brains but can't get it. Sounds like a great game!

It's unusual for me that people mention the cup final replay as a favourite. I couldn't go to the replay but it still rates as one of my worst moments ever, just watching on tv. I can't stand to watch a replay even now. That lazy twat waltzing through our defence & the fact that it was those obnoxious cockney gits...

I hate Spurs.

Ahh cheers, I kind of remember it happening now having seen that.

Someone should show that video to SWP. The swagger he used to play with in those days is the ingredient that's missing from his game now.

God he was so special, some players have games where they are unplayable, he had an entire season. Two defenders, three defenders, skips past them all like they were training dummies.

Just made myself sad.

I watched him play as a kid at Platt Lane & I was buzzing about his potential. I think you've got the right word for the player we sold to Chelsea; special. We've got back a grafter who has the occasional special moment. Not the same.

Made myself sad too now!

Has to be the !981 Cup final replay v. Spurs. Couldn't get a ticket for the first match but camped outside Wembley overnight to buy them for the replay. Went with a mate on a lovely May evening, City 2-1 up and deservedly so. Great atmosphere. Spurs fans singing "We'll take more care of you, Archibald" to the tune of a British Airways tv commercial of the time. Afterwards went back to Putney where I was living then and had a drink in the White Horse where some Spurs fans came over to shake hands, and then home. I was single and had just started seeing this New Zealand lass who liked rugby & cricket but not football. She'd watched the match on the telly, though, and was waiting at home to console me. I walked in to find her wearing a City scarf and a smile and she consoled me amazingly.

Apart from that there was my first ever City match, on a little black & white TV, that was the 1955 Cup Final, and a couple of years later one of the first games I saw at Maine Road, a Cup tie also against Newcastle which City lost 5-4 after being 3-0 up. with the Blaydon Races echoing all around the ground from the Geordie fans..

That Samaras goal was a blinder. But you've been dazzled by the triangles we played before Ashton scored.

Watch again. It is a fantastic goal.

I remember everyone on this board pissing themselves with excitement over that Miller run. I always preferred Beasley as he could pas the ball.
