Playing against a new Keeper

Postby btajim » Wed Apr 28, 2010 12:48 pm

So Fulop arrives to presumably start in Goal against Villa, Spurs and West Ham. Obviously the Goalkeeping crisis is big news in the Premiership (and so is our alleged attempt to get Hart back despite it not being within the T&C of the deal) - but it's got me wondering if opposition sides will use our misfortune to their advantage. i.e. Be more attack minded, shoot from wherever possible to try and guage the new Keeper in between the Sticks etc.

Our new Man is playing in front of a defence he doesn't know and hasn't been playing regularly for Sunderland either.

Anyone?

If teams come out and attack us, then I think that will be to our advantage!

Doug and Ted mentioned it in another thread - we will surely HAVE to go at these teams now more than ever because whatever about Mancini's "lets keep it tight" philosophy in nearly all the other games, having a weakness in defence and a blistering attack should only point to one thing - attack.

So basically, whilst I'm quite sure you have a point and other managers will be saying to their players that as a unit in defence, we may feel slightly vulnerable and that should be exposed, I also believe it is irrelevent if we go at them with everything we have.

If we have this philosophy and we have the one I hope for, I really believe we will be favourites to not only beat these teams, but to claim fourth.

Are we sure Fulop will actually play? Maybe he's brought in just for cover, so that we have a keeper on the bench.
Gunnar knows the lads, which in my opinion makes up for a lot of his inexperience.

i also mentioned it in another thread.. that Villa might be inclined to try that little bit more to get into shooting, crossing positions.. which basically will play into our hands.. possibly in quite a big way.

I would point out though that while its obvious there is disruption at the back and the poor guy is getting thrown right into the fuclin deep end here, we and oppos dont know how he is going to perform. He may well be more competant than Shay on crosses and corners.. he is 6'5" afterall. So until we have seen him in action over the course of at least one game it is all an unknown.

Beyond that there are two aspects to the whole thing.. the changed psychology of the City team and the changed psychology of initially Villa and then Spurs. ( but Spurs will be watching the Villa game, so it depends like i say how he does )

We will no doubt look to protect him, but i would argue that isn't such a massive difference for our defence as they tend to protect Shay on corners etc as he doesn't come out to collect.
Shot stopping has got to be the main gig so i suppose a bit of extra effort to get blocks in will be order of the day.
Sum total i dont feel that it will change our approach that much at all tbh.

As for Villa as i say they might look to get into positions to release shots more than they would have against Shay.. so they might try to prowl about the 10 yds in front of the area looking to line up possible openings.. and end up overworking it. I can see it playing to our advantage tbh apart from long range efforts. Not sure how many Villa players are known to have that good a shot.
Spurs would be more of a worry but then we and they have to wait and see what FlipFlop is actually like.

if he commands his area well then CARL will be calling for Shay's head.

He has everything to gain from this situation. From being forgotten at Sunderland to being in the spotlight at City, it's a huge chance for him, and I'm sure Fulop will step up to the challenge. I wouldn't be surprised to see him pulling some great saves (hopefully he won't have to, but you know what I mean).

I'm as sure as I can be, that (barring injury/illness/crap training performance) he will start - it comes down to a choice between an international keeper with 14 senior club starts in the Prem/cups this season and an international keeper with less than half a senior Prem start.

Anybody remember Simon Tracey?

Let's hope it doesn't go the same way as that one did. That was my darkest ever day as a Blue that one.

Who was that small keeper we got in on loan before and he had one fantastic game - about 5 years ago I think? Sorry for total vagueness!

Fulop will play. If Gunnar was definitely up to the job then they'd have drafted anyone in to cover. The chances of him too getting injured are slim - although who wants to tempt fate?!

With all that accurate info to go on, I have a feeling you're talking about Arnie Arason who played against tottenham in THAT fa cup game where we came from 3 down at half time with thank you joey being sent off as the teams left the pitch for half time! IIRC Arnie pulled off one of the most incredible double saves I've ever seen from a City goalkeeper when the game was at 3-3.

Is that the one you be thinking of?

I think that double save gets way too much credit. The first save was excellent but he only got to the 2nd because poyet got so little power into his header.

I sort of agree, although I think the second save was actually more impressive than the first.. a better keeper would have made the save first time around.

Whoever plays the OP's point is still valid as they are both unknown quantities, but from what I can tell they are similar in size (ie massive) and don't mind coming off their line for crosses. Experience = better decision making in my book so Fulop gets the nod from me. But let's just hope it's Friedel and Gomes doing all the work in the next two games instead!

Imo they wont as they have no need too as they are at this moment better off points wise.

Rubbish. The second shot was going in and he had to be there to stop it.
