Speaking of gifted ball players, who remembers Tony Cunningham?

Forever in my shame, I went on GMR and had a rant and a rave about Edgehill one night. I was that fucking mad at his performance, when they rang back for my call I jumped out of the car (which I was driving down oxford road at the time) and had a mad rant about him. The Police subsequently pulled up and took my phone off me, just as I was telling Jimmy Wagg to look out of the studio window as I was being done for "edgehill denial". As a true pro and one who supports the players and club rationally, I think he called me an idiot just before he cut me off

I felt so sorry for him when he got the grief for the own goal, and had no part of that, or of booing him in the ground, but he was the most frustrating player I think I have seen - sublime to the ridiculous is the best term to describe him. What on earth happened there?

I always thought he was a good player, but somehow, he had a year or two where he just had his head up his arse. It was unbelievable and I still dont understand to this day how he went backwards so quickly - and given that he had the fans support as a youngster who came through, made his fall perhaps unique in the history of city. We might give Richards shit today, but nothing like he went through.

Maybe we could have looked upon him as a wing-back these days, a decent attacking threat with his pace, but not much use going back.

I was thoroughly ashamed of what the city fans did THAT day. I was sat right in line with him and the ball in the Platt Lane, and you could see on his face he realised he had probably just fucked up once too often, but nobody who has given their life to a club deserves to be treated like we fans treated him that day, and I think he only ever played once or twice for city after that, and he got the biggest cheer I have heard when he came on.

I have never even considered booing an individual city player, and never ever would - as I saw at close quarters the anguish of someone who REALLY cared about the club. Fortunately I dont think we will ever see anything like that again as I think most city fans realised they had overstepped the mark that day.

Edit: I personally never heard the racism, although perhaps understandable in the platt lane. Although I spent a couple of years on the north stand, it was not in the years he struggled badly

Paul Hince. Played for City (scored, too) then took up writing about it.
And that Georgian lad, Tshkadadze (?), did his leg very badly at Fulham and never played again. Remember hearing how his wife was listening to the game on the radio in Manchester and burst into tears when he was carried off.

What was the saddest part was that he was Blue himself. A real double dagger to the heart.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Murtaz Shelia didn't last long either. Kavelashvilli was a strange one, barely got a start & scored the odd goal when he did play, then he'd be dropped again.
