Vincent Kompany has looked back with regret at points dropped earlier in the season in City’s ultimately unsuccessful bid to qualify for the Champions League.

The Belgian has pinpointed a number of drawn games at home as being key to the fine margin between fourth place and below, but despite Wednesday night’s disappointment he’s optimistic about next season and beyond.

“I’m obviously disappointed, we came very, very close. Credit to Tottenham, they played a very good game, but I don’t think we lost it on this night.

"The season has been long. It’s painful,
but so many games we can look back
on and think, if we would have played
those games today, we wouldn’t have
lost or drawn them. We would have
won them and add those points up and
it’s a completely different situation."

“I think we did very well to stay in the Champions League battle. There were some moments where it does not look so good anymore because we spilled stupid points. I can remember Burnley at home, and then we win 6-1 at Burnley and you realise it was a massive, massive loss.

“Then Fulham at home, and we are talking about teams we have been leading by one or two goals and we drew those games. Those types of situations wouldn’t have happened anymore at this time. But then you think, you have got a whole season to progress next year and that gives me a positive feeling.”

The 24-year-old is determined that City will learn from this season’s experiences and is already setting his sights higher for the forthcoming campaign.

“We have done fairly well,” he adds, “and thinking of next season we are going to be a better team than we have looked at the end of this, which looked a better team than the one at the beginning of the season.

“It will never be OK because we are hungry. We are a team that wants to win and has never given up. When we have lost games we have always come out stronger from it. That was the kind of the story of our season.

“It’s going to be the best season finish for City for a long time and that’s progression for us. Next year we want to do better and if we do better we are in the Champions League.”

I've thought at the time and I've siad it it since that that sequence of draws at home to Burnley, Hull and Fulham would be costly and it was. Other than those three games, we have gained our fair share of points over the season and have delivered good results.

The reason we won't be playing in the Champions League next season is just because we lost last night. I know this because I heard people at the match saying it, have heard it all day from people and have even read it on this very forum, all of these people seemed to be very sensible and level-headed and I have no reason to doubt them.

Top top manager mate. He has all the attributes needed from player making the transition to management. Seems intelligent, clever, genuinely loves and wants to understand the game (= THE most important thing..... being a good player don't necesserily mean you understand the game in level needed in management) and a proper gentleman.

I think you are right though, he'll probably move to pastures new and be succesful in whatever he does.

Former Finnish Crystal Palace midfielder Aki Riihilahti said that Vinnie is the most intelligent footballer he has ever met and they became big mates while in rehabilitation in Germany same time. And for those who don't remember Riihilahti, he kept witty column on Guardian about basically anything but professional football. Also finished his master's degree in university while playing football. One of the very few footballers who has ever come through as GENUINELY intelligent. I don't just mean intelligent for footballer. Which usually means IQ slightly over the size of their boot.

If we had won on wednesday would would be inches from the chamions league

If we had not ballsed up twice against Everton we would be still in the race

If we hadnt played like wallys at Hull, we would still be there of there abouts.

If we had picked up more than 1 point from the United and Arsenel games which were there for the taking, we would be still in the hunt.

Its easy to pick a game and say if we had won that we would be in the champions league.

I know the draws under Hughes have cost us but equally so have some of the other dropped points under Mancini. A loss is a loss and a draw is a draw regardless of who is in charge.
