Europa League

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Europa League

Postby ant london » Mon May 10, 2010 6:27 am

I've just been listening to the radio and they were saying that Liverpool will have to play in the Europa League qualifying rounds starting in July

Do we have to do this? Or do we skip the initial stage due to our higher league position

Any ideas chaps?

Liverpool have qualification rounds, we don't, Villa don't.

Thanks Slim

Do they have seeding in the post-qualification rounds? How does that work if it is applied?

Do you think any of the teams will make it a priority? I think we will but I don't know about the other two. Maybe the Pool will but I doubt Villa will.

Seedings for both are done by the UEFA co-efficient, it's usually quite low and for some reason I think City were seeded second(in group) last time we were in, which could only be a result of our last Fairplay entrance.

Liverpool will be seeded all the way through, they only have the 3rd qualification round(home and away) before they join us in the group stages.

Maybe. Though I wouldn't put it past them losing in the Faroe Islands, with Torres and Gerard still on leave!!

It's great we are not in those qualification rounds this time those things were a little scrappy last time and although we got through okay it did nothing but tire our players out.

No. They only have the third round before joining us in the play-off round. That's a 2 legged game before the group stages.

I'll be happy for us to play as many games as possible and am really looking forward to it.
I think its the experience most of our players will benefit from aswell.

I'm looking forward to a competition that in reality, we probably will start off as one of the top 3 favourites.

We should have a realistic ambition of winning this competition, however my big concern would be seeing Spuds, United, Arsenal, Liverpool all in the latter stages which would be a fucking disaster

Mancini has already spoken about it being a competition we will go out to win, which is very encouraging

I think you have it spot on there and personally cant see why some are thinking us being in this comp is bad news.
When Fulham play in this final I'd be over the moon if thats us next year.

Its a consolation prize, so suppose its a disappointment. Personally I am gutted we are in the Europa League, but I am realistic enough to know that we most likely would have been playing in the Europa League after xmas anyway - so in reality we have missed out on 3 home games in the group stages, of which probably only 1 would have been against decent opposition - the big loss has been the cash.

Other than that, I'm not right arsed to be honest - plus I prefer us playing on Sundays, as Sunday is a shit day

This the first time in a while that we've qualified for European Football in terms of League finish and not via the Fair Play award. It's got to be a step in the right direction.

Would have loved Champions League, though.
