I think he's been off this season, but he is a top player, wouldn't be our playmaker, but can play wide left and right, hold the centre as well as anyone and has a habit of trailing the attack ala Scholes, Lampard.

Definitely squad level, possible stand in for Bellamy on the left.

The big factor is as well is that he actually scores goals and not many of our midfielders do.

Yeah, but Vieira, Barry and de Jong are not the most attacking trio you could find. I think you'll find a lot of problem has been, one attacking midfielder all season(johnno being injured again) and our defence is still getting to know each other and needs the protective screen of defensive midfielders. Once the back settles, they won't need as much protection and we can move the midfield further upfield, more goals....MOAR GOALS!

Cant see Barry, Vieira or De Jong grabbing many goals to be honest, even if they dont have to protect the defence. We havnt played an attacking midfielder for a while as Ireland has been upto scratch as he would've been the main lad for it.

Ireland needs to change his head....hahah, We do need to buy one but I think writing off Ireland at this stage might be something we would regret. And there is always a young lad from boro with an amazing range and ability to run at defenders in him.

with respect JR... He can play a number of positions ( 5/6) and I thinkthat sort of versatility can be very useful, and means IMO that he is better than above average.

He was good on the wing, but has looked extremely good in central midfield - once again we are being linked with a versatile player

I thought he was a regular having a windup at first, not so sure now though - still entertaining though in a red-headed step child sort of way.

Who would you choose? Realisticly?

That's a bloody good question mate. I have fair few names in my mind (Courguff, Hamsik, Gerrard if available etc) but we have Marwood to do this thinking for us. What I do know though is that we need a top quality central midfielder to step into next level. Look at three teams above us (I think Spurs are on par with us at best); Arsenal have Fabregas, Chelsea have Lampard and Rags have (had) Scholes. If you spread this, there hasn't been many teams in Europe that have been really succesfull who haven't had World Class central midfielder/playmaker. There have been plenty with no top quality right back or left winger though. It's THE key position in team and currently we are lacking badly there. I'd actually buy two of them to be on the safe side and if Robbie don't think Ireland will deliver next season.

Regarding Milner, I'm not saying he is shite, far from it. He is good/really good player with versatility, although I DO think he overperformed this season because of O'Neil and their system. I don't for the second think though that he'll ever be really top class.... mentioned in the same bracket as players I listed above.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Morning BC...basically my thoughts regarding Gerrard and the deal being in "the balance", and this being the reason for the option of bidding for Milner appear to be true. I saw something mentioned amongst the riddles on BM and I think Ashley Cole was indicated...is that correct??

Am I the only one who thinks Bluecreed could be Garry Cook? Sounds like his sort of bravado the way it reads.

Cue post from Bluecreed tomorrow, when there's nothing in the papers, that Liverpool, Villa, Benfica etc "bottled it"

Bluecreed appears to be the second coming of Millsy - in fact, is that you Millsy? It must be if its not Garry Cook.

For what it's worth Milner is an excellent player, good solid professional with a great attitude, a team ethic and a lot of talent...and he is young.

I would definitely have him at City without a minute's hesitation.

However, we dont have a desperate need for a solid midfielder, we have a need for a spectacular player.....someone with guile, a brilliant footballing brain, quick feet, the ability to see (and play) that killer ball to release our attacking threats. And/or we need a player who can drive from midfield into the forward line and score goals.

Preferably both of these aspects of play could come in the same player but I would be happy signing a Berkovic/Bernarbia/Kinkladze type schemer and having Milner as the latter type.

The fucking infuriating part of last season and the current status quo is that Stephen Ireland is just such a player. I'm not saying that we would not benefit from signing a Gourcuff/Hamsik....we should bag them if possible. But I would like such a player to come in addition to Ireland, to compete with him....and then add Milner into our midfield options too.
