That's not really true at all though now is it? He failed to break through in Bayern Leverkusen and didn't make much impact at all in Bayern. He was decent in Everton though.

His reputation is mostly built on his excellent performances for US national team.

And EVERY player in the world is open for pisstake. Certainly every single one that don't play for City. What American's think of people taking the piss out of Donovan, German's piss taken out of Lahm, Greek about Samaras and so on and so on has fuck all to do with Manchester City. I've been called racist for calling Samaras and Lahm shit by the way. Hilarious.

Alahm akbar!
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Saw it pop up on SSN ticker last night :

BREAKING NEWS: Roberto Mancini tells Sky Sports News Manchester City are trying to sign Landon Donovan.

They may as well say we are trying to sign the entire US Squad.

Yep, Im pretty sure that is the thinkin behind it. Get our name spread over the States. I also think he could be good for us, but the main reason is publicity..

Surely this was just a carefully-placed statement designed to jolly Villa along a bit with Milner? Seems to have worked.

Not a bad player for the squad, and obviously he's now huge news in the US so if he signs for us our profile will rocket. Would be a canny move and I doubt that Mancini was just paying lip service

Landon Donovan is a high quality player who has done enough in North American football, on loan at Everton and for the United States national team to deserve being linked with a move to Manchester City. The only significant problem with the transfer would be for Donovan: apart from a pay rise, he would benefit little from a move, especially given his age. In his late 20s, Donovan would be better off moving to a club where he could reasonably expect regular first team football. Just because Roberto Mancini (or any other City manager) rates a player, does not mean we need him.
(The fact that Donovan did not break into the Bayern or Bayer Leverkusen squad is as relavent to his quality as a player as Forlan's relative failure with the Rags.)

Well this has gotten very little attention over here from the mainstream sports media. The World Cup is over so football coverage is pretty much nonexistent.
