derby day, for the older folks

Just bought a few old programmes on e-bay, among them is one from the U****d v. City game at O.T. in March 1968, when CIty won 3-1 and went on to win the league. Bit of a historical document in its way. The guy who originally bought it at the match was a red, but on the team sheets he'd written that "City became the dominant side and displayed great football." He gave Doyle and Charlton 3 stars each and wrote "carried off" by Bell's name and the one word "off" by Crerand's. Next to Law's name he wrote "useless!" and next to Aston's he put "came on for Herd, of all people." All written in fountain pen. The programme cost ninepence - this was still pre-decimal - and carried an advert for a trip to the away leg of the European Cup semi-final against Real Madrid, bookable through Gaytours (truly) of Deansgate for 25 guineas. Youngsters can ask their dads what a guinea was.

...especially 25 of them! I guess 25 could equal the strength of 9 huskies in the iditarod?

Things like those old programs mesmerised me when I was a kid. My Bro had them hangin around our bedroom and I was fascinated by them and the old Shoot magazine that had cut-out league tables that you could update after every game. And huge pastel posters of Rodney, Franny, King Colin. Happy, happy days indeed:o)

When I was a nipper my 'party trick' was to be able to tell people the result, scorers, and exact attendance for any and every game in the season - such was my avid reading of the programmes.

Nowadays I have trouble remembering who we played last week :-o
