Best Player So Far Pre-Season?

Postby King Kev » Thu Aug 05, 2010 6:23 am

I know it's fun to take the piss out of him but my vote goes to Jo.

He has worked hard, shown some good touches and bagged a few goals too! Could this be the season we see why we paid all that money for him?

he is certainly the most improved, he looked shit for us and everton, but looks much better this season. Still not the quality or calibre of player that will shoot us to a champs league place though.

AJ for me is the one who looks the best and most hungry.

On current form we could do a lot worse than keep him for now.....his value at the moment is jack diddly squat.

If he continues this form which, I completely agree with you, has looked a million miles better than first time round (and for everton 1st and 2nd spell) then either we have a pretty good player on our hands or we can at least get a half decent fee for him at Xmas/Summer 2011.

I remember when he signed some said that he was much better operating as a "Number 10" type player off a more advanced striker. It seemed odd that we'd signed him to do that as we had both Robinho and Elano who also like to occupy those kind of positions. As well as having Ireland who often operated there.

What we didn't have at the time was a decent proper striker.....up in the box. I'm loathe to make excuses for him on one hand as I think his attitude and application were poor (and continued that way at Everton) but maybe it was part new country/new league/new distractions and part square peg/round hole as we wanted him to be that advanced striker and what we are seeing now is clear evidence that he really is best suited being the player more involved with the midfield and using deft touches and movement to bring in his partner or the advancing midfield.

Being able to use him to do this, as well as the wide players actually performing would mean that hopefully Carlos and Adebayor (and maybe soon Balotelli) can concentrate on profiting from that dimension he can bring and will stop dropping deep and wide and not being in the box when the ball gets there.

I've not been able to see much action but from what I have seen he has been the stand out talent so far......it's a funny old game

Ant, you've posted some great stuff over the past couple of days but this is your best. When Jo was in Russia making a name for himself he played as second striker. Now he is back in that role he looks good again.

Again, it's not rocket science.

I was thinking to myself last night that we may as well keep him - if he gets his head out of his arse and knuckles down and gets his career back on track - we could have a player on our hands

I was actually surprised Jo got dropped after them first few games as I thought he was doing alright. Yes, he fell over a lot, but he bagged a few goals and it was plain to see he was uncomfortable being used as a target man. We should have stuck a second striker up with him and give him a go at that. Anyway, I agree, keep hold of him, lets see how he does. He'd be useful in the cups Europa / IMO.

The thing is though, Jo has played every game pre-season so its obvious he's gonna get a chance at staying

I agree Jo has been the best player. Unfortunately he still keeps missing easy opportunuities but I think it's as much through being desperate to get a place in the squad. If there's a spare gap in the squad caused by outgoings, or if it's a toss up between him, RSC, Ned etc he deserves a chance. Otherwise no.

I am with IBH on this one. He flatters to deceive. OK he has scored a couple but really I don't see what all the fuss is about and if we are to pin any hopes of a top 3 finish on Jo we might as well give up.His touch and holding ability is average at best and I would hope we have better back up to the real first team than him.

I'm not sure we do if, as is being suggested, we're going to be shipping a bunch of players out soon. It depends how many more are coming in I suppose but Balotelli counts as U21.

Zabba looks very wound up in each game. I recon he thinks he may be on his bike & doesn't want to go.
