I don't think he was fully tested as a full back last night and I wouldnt blame him at all for the first penalty. That was just Barry being stupid and slow and he knew it. Going forward Kolarov looked quality but I didn't think he looked fast at all ( no quicker than Bridge) just confident, fairly powerful and with a trick or two and his dead ball delivery( apart from one corner) was excellent.

Ted Hughes wrote:I've been harping on for seasons about how pathetic our dead ball play is & how many goals/points our competitors get from quality balls in from set plays. (Often the rags/Chelsea's 1st or winning goal is a set piece). What Kolarov produced last night was as good as Gerrard or Giggs or anyone in those situations.

Imo, if he keeps that standard up, even if he's a shit fullback we just play him in midfield. Johnson or SWP aren't in the same class at delivering the ball, end of. He's a great asset.

Spot on i've been crying out for a genuine set piece specialist for years, im not just talking about a guy who can spank a free kick but can also deliver a inch perfect cross to the head/feet of our man at the post. Kolarov is this man.

Also imo i think his all round game in terms of defending, passing, crossing, getting forward was excellent last night. He's definitely better than Bridge that's for sure.

Also something i was particularly impressed with last night was his communication with his defense and with jinky in front of him. You need to have leaders at the back and kolarov was constantly pointing and barking orders, for a guy who has only just joined the team and is still in a bedding in period, to speak out and command players like he did shows great confidence. This will be another massive asset to us this season, you can't undervalue the importance of having leaders in the back line. This breeds confidence to the whole team and confidence leads to wins!

All in all i think he will be a fantastic signing in the long run, although i think it may take 5-6 games before we really start seeing the best of him.

So he's not gonna get raped for pace off speedy wingers then? Thats massively important for a full back IMO.

I recon he's pretty fast but only used it in very short busts attacking last night. It was impossible to say though, from last night's performance, how good he'd be vs the Aaron Lennons of the world. I'm very optimistic he can do it once he's settled in though.

I'd have liked to have seen him against Richards from the New York Red Bulls, we'd have seen how fast he was then.

Corners....meh, he hit the first man which was disappointing.

energy and work rate good, excellent attacking threat, however, I think he is going to have to rely on the CB and LM positions covering his ass on many occasions this season as he loves to go forward.

thanks mate defensively how was he? after watching the highlights i think the second pen was harsh.

Agreed - the modern game needs FBs that can get forward - and when they arrive provide good delivery - otherwise you get counter-attacked with players out of position - that is why I think he will be a top prem player and why we need Boateng at RB 'cos neither Micah or Zab (as much as I love the player) can deliver

Plus Richards never tracks back after a run, he leaves his position exposed

He seems to me a sort of young Sinisa Mihajlovic, same way to treat the ball and same ability to kick with violence with his left foot.
I think he could play at his best on the left much more with a right footed than another left footed. SWP is for me his ideal partner!

I wouldn't give him all the free kicks or corners, I'd certainly let AJ have a few of them.

Honestly, my only real impression so far (only saw around 30 minutes of the match) is that he's tall.
