Unprepared pundits

Here is the place to talk about all things city and football!

Unprepared pundits

Postby OliverHardy » Sun Sep 26, 2010 8:57 am

- That lazy "I used to be a footballer so I dont need to do any prep to be a pundit" Shearer, constantly referring to David Silva as David Villa last night on MOTD until corrected by Linekar.

-Dirty 'arry's son referred to Zabaleta as 'Zieta' all the way through post match analysis on SS1

-Souness talked about how David Silva kept Branislav Ivanovic busy whilst Tevez took on A.Cole, when in actual fact the other defender was Terry rather than Ivanovic

These are just 3 inexcusable errors from our games yesterday, but week in week out it's happening more and more with pundits. ill prepared Narcissism seems to be common place these days, where ex players feel that their reputation as an ex player alone should be enough to enable them to earn money on tv (sadly it probably is).

Stan Collymore has highlighted this numerous times on Talk Sport (and although he is a bell end himself generally), I do agree with him, in fact Collymore (although he is a bell end himself generally) does actually prepare well to talk about the beautiful game and does know the correct names of pretty much every footballer in the Premier League. I'm not saying that Collymore should be a top pundit, but surely execs at BBC, ITV, ESPN and Sky must ask questions on people's commitment to their roles if they can't even be bothered to spend 30 mins before a big game to learn the 22 players names!

What do people think of this?

Be thankful you have uninformed pricks on your channels, we have Mark fucking Bosnich on ours.

A more clueless tosser you will be hard pressed to find, and when Robbie Slater(who has gotten infinitely better than when he started) is trying to make a point, ignorant and consistent cackling can be heard in the background or even poking a pen into the shot in front of Robbie's face and general behaviour you wouldn't tolerate from a 12yo, let alone a pundit on the premier show on Fox.

It really doesn't bother me, and I'm surprised at the amount of people on here who get irate about such a trivial matter.

For me when the people are talking on MoTD it signals that I need another brew/ beer/ piss. Similarly when it's HT on a live game I wander off to MCF.net, usually to read about who shit the HT pundits are doing.

Apart from Souness' name mix up, I actually thought he was quite good in the post match analysis.

It was Jamie Redknapp who was awful. He kept making ridiculous points and trying to get Souness to agree, but Souness wasn't listening. I also liked the fact that Souness said that City were excellent and played really well. I think the best we got from Redknapp is that we were 'OK''.

At the end of the day i have to pay my tv license to pay people like shearer to play golf and then turn up to do a couple of hours of work on a saturday night (for which he still can't be bothered preparing for). Unlike Sky etc I dont actually have a choice to say I dont want to pay. Thats what particularly annoys me about MOTD in general and the likes of Shearer. So its not really that trivial as I am bring forced to fund the BBC to pay them

It's the same with everything on the BBC though mate. I never wanted The Queen Vic to burn down, but it turns out I had little say in the matter :(

lmao. to be honest, it's not the worst thing in the world but you'd expect someone whose job it is to say these player's names, to actually be able to do so. i'm more embarassed at their ignorance than anythin else.

What I want to know is, what does a commentator/pundit do for 6 days of the week when not working? Serious question - I'm not having a go at them, it's something I genuinely wonder. Let's say they spend 1 day prior to a match getting stats n shit together that they can talk about during a game, that's still 5 days a week doing what?

I imagine chumps like Shearer are on a pay and you play basis whereby he's booked for the day he's needed. Of course despite already being waded this sum will still no doubt be enough to live comfortably on. He's then free to spend the rest of the week topping up his tan, doing McDonald's ads, not learning players names etc

The less popular commentators will just find work where they can I imagine. You may remember Alistair Mann from Granada News who's doing MoTD now. He crops up writing a few pieces, doing Europa games, you can even book him as a speaker for corporate events. I imagine just like any TV/ radio presenter in a way.

These people are getting paid a good wage to watch football, whereas people like you and I have to pay for the privilege. The point I'm trying to make is I don't think pundits can really offer devoted football fans, like those who'd spend hours a day talking football on a forum, much if any insight at all. We all get players names wrong, that's no big deal to me. I imagine at least 90% of this site are more knowledgeable about football than Shearer.

The last great thing to happen in football punditry was when Pardew accused Essien of raping Ched Evans.

I think you're spot on about Souness - I think overall he's a top class pundit unlike Redknapp who's clearly thick as pigshit. It was cringeworthy to watch Redknapp trying to justify his own bullshit views by asking Souness to agree with him - he wasn't remotely interested in what little twitcher had to say. I can't really understand why Sky have chosen to lick Redknapp's arse in recent years - he's alright for the odd game here and there but to book him for every fucking match - well he's simply not up to the task IMO.

Andy Gray got my goat by suggesting (around the 40 min mark) that Chelsea could "just up their game at any moment". Yeah right. They were keeping it goalless because they wanted to and have a recent record in this fixture that suggests they were just toying with us. No credit to us whatsoever. He also said after they'd had the ball for a couple of minutes resulting in a couple of attacks that Chelsea had started to "take control of the game in the last 10 minutes". Utter nonsense.
Balotelli......that's a brilliant finish.

We have this expectation of pundits that they're these Douglas Higgenbottom characters who go to watch training the week before a match they're covering and watch videos of about a dozen games with a notebook and pen. People who eat, sleep and live football and work damn hard to be paid a decent wage to do what they love. Scouts who just happen to work for the media.

Instead we find that many of them actually watch as little football as possible and are thoroughly unprofessional and disrespectful of their audience. But they're the ones who people watch, the majority of football fans listen to the worst pundits. Professional ones don't get called as often for the big games.

I would love to present a show - Id call it "excuse the pun"

I would show up fucking useless inept gits like Rednapp and the clan for what they are - clueless.

Can you imagine it......it would certainly make them actually do their fucking homework instead of make it up as you go along.

yep actually.
i was saying they were 'ill prepared' (i.e. not ready due to lack of preparation) and showed narcissism (i.e. egotistical, vain or conceited, in this case 'egotistical' and vain)

I heard Alan Shearer refer to David Silva as David Villa on about seven occasions (radio and TV) yesterday. He will never be prepared for anything, save a round of golf with his MotD chums. And it's not like he even has a personality (likeable or otherwise), which might help atone slightly for his general uselessness. His wooden features and body language (or rather, lack of) makes for weird TV viewing. I'm kind of waiting for his increasing red head to implode like a deflating beach ball.
