Maine Road keepsake

Postby Rae4685 » Sat Oct 02, 2010 6:39 am

Was wondering did the club take any items from Maine Road to the new stadium? In terms of fittings and fixtures? Some clubs integrate parts of the old ground into the new design which I k ow was maybe more difficult for us giving the way we got Eastlands but surely something was taken. Watching the bloke in blue moon rising who had kes from Maine Road made me wonder as that bird became a simple iconic memory for me and there's nothing noticeable at the new ground.

The mosaic from above the Platt Lane(?) stand is incorporated somewhere near the memorial garden, I think.

Didn't they bury something under the pitch?? Could have been Danny Mills but I'm not sure.

I know originally they had the old padded seats from the directors box at Maine Road in the dugouts at CoMS before Sven got the padded car seats in there

One of the old signs from Maine road would of been nice inside the ground somewhere. Remember the temporary seating!?! Oh how I miss a cold wet windy winters nights with no shelter! Quite the opposite for a hobo

The one hanging from the Kippax? If so, it was hanging from the Colin Bell Stand at CoMS but disappeared last season, explaining why we had pigeons dive bombing us in the family stand during the Chelsea game

Don't complain about the pigeons mate. Piginho nearly scored against Bolton the other year!!

Couldn't decide if we were on the same page or not. It appears I was a chapter behind

Remember the old Gypsie curse.... she left a trinket box with bits and bobs including an old rusted horseshoe. This is still with the club and I believe occasionally used in the museum.

The bloke in the city film had it in his garage can't remember if he said it fell down or was given to him. The club obviously knew he had it.

No-one is supposed to know that.. we sent him out on 'loan' for a few years to confuse the trail and it seemed to have worked till now!

I visited that beautiful ground on several occasions, in both home and away stands (saw LFC utterly dominate yer sad asses 0-4 in the FA Cup indeed). The Kippax was one fantastic stand.

Interestingly, I've decided that, if we were to move to the Olympic Stadium, I will cash in my chips and stop going to see West Ham play live.

I only go there (The Boleyn) now to relive my youth, I think. I still think about Maine Road as being your 'home'. Sorry to say this, but COMS isn't a patch on that place.

It's not a patch on it....yet...... but for different reason than you might expect.

I remember all my early days of watching city being at Maine Road, and therefore have an affection for the place that the new place will never ever have.

However in the lives of any City fan under 40, we never won fuck all, and so in time assuming we go on to be successful, all the great experiences we know will come at COMS will become a different type of history for me, and will become the formative years for the younger generation.

Who knows, but in 50 years when people look back on the difference in achievement between COMS and Maine Road, the gypsy curse myth will be almost fact in the minds of most city fans, Maine Road will be remembered as the place where city failed time and again, and COMS where the legends of teams of yesteryear will live on.
