Seems like it's always been that way and it spilled over into baseball where they compete in the same division and are always likely to meet in the playoffs and many times during the season.

Babe ruth was born and started his career in Baltimore ... not that you care about that, but we generally don't like the red sox and we hate the yankees. It's always been a bit eerie to me how there seems to be a parallel between my home town rivalries and city's rivalries in the prem ... seems like it is going to get a bit weirder too.

Red Sox fans call the Yankees the evil empire! sounds rather familiar

I can't stand Ricky Tomlinson's Liverpool fandom, i got the My Arse audiobook for christmas and it might be the most boring book on football of all time, he'd start a story and when he got to the punchline...he'd start another story

I am glad - and I really hope that this a good new owner and he invests to make Liverpool a top 4 club

We have nothing to fear - we have won the lottery and no new owner will be as good as the Sheik - no new management team will be commercially astute as ours - so the more teams that can be up there to hasten the decline of the scum red twats - well the better from my POV

You are going against the tribal nature of every fan - and forgetting all the lording over us Scouse have doen since we had a sort of parity in 1977.

Basically - we won the lottery, they lost it, fuck 'em!!!

John Henry is a class act, as he used to own the Florida Marlins, and then bought his dream team in the Red Sox. He should be a quality owner and help restore them to where they are accustomed to be. But I hope it takes a while and they are relegated for at least a season.

On the news they just said before the credit crunch this guy had a fortune of 536 mil so when he spends 300 mil on buying the club it only leaves him with 236 mil which is less than our first team cost so isn't this guy gonna have to loan money too. So are the any better off?

Am I missing the point?

He'll probably take loans and apply them to the club like Glaziers did.

RBS are in a position to take control of the club as it cannot repay the loan as it falls due/refinance it (which means repay it with the proceeds of a new loan, same concept as a remortgage).

Hicks & Gillett bought the club and mortgaged it upon acquisition. I think that they have something like 350million owed to RBS

Some of that is secured against the club's assets (about 110 million I think) and some of it is advanced to them/their other companies (240 million)

Their "shares" in the club are worthless

All the new Americans are doing is paying them 300 million with which to pay off the 240million they owe and maybe a portion of the 110 million will get paid off

More likely is that they'll want 60 million for the shares and to leave the club with the outstanding 110 million obligation

Either way they will need new finance for:

a) players
b) the famed new stadium

I would be hugely surprised if some of the 300 million of new investment doesn't get loaded back onto the club (although likely a more manageable amount). Even if it does not I dont think there's a cat in hell's chance that the new owners will be stumping up their own money for this

Liverpool won't be a credible threat for a good couple of years

We should make a reply to this video. Loads of City fans saying how much we love the Sheikh and Khaldoon for what they've given our club.

Although I wouldn't want to upset all the dippers fans, or would I?

We were bought as a long term investment, but mainly as a marketing exercise. With the current squad and a champs league spot, plus the world out of recession, the sheikh could probably get the best part of £500m i.e. most of his money back.

Liverpool will purely be an investment and therefore whoever buys them will either want his money back sharpish or will do it through a loan which needs repaying. Assuming turnover of £200m and wages of £110m (same as arse, but they have 25% higher gates, at higher cost plus champs league cash) that gives £90m profit, providing you don't buy any players, improve stadium, paint training ground etc. When factoring in costs of running a club, there's not a lot of profit to be made, if you want/need to be in top 4. Add in that Liverpool need at least 5 players to be on a par with last season's top 4 & us, and that's not a short term prospect. They can't buy anyone till January, which means top 4 this season's gone and they'll then have the problem we've had of convincing players to join a club not in the top competition.

Add in the UEFA rules and they'll struggle to spend money quickly, meaning the time to improve the squad is lengthened and can't overpay like we've had. It could be 5 or so years till Liverpool are back at the top. As a long term investment, it would work, but they can forget about winning things for a while
