Rooney would not have gone to the trouble of letting this story out just to get a better contract. The comments were just too damning about United's future for him to just happily sign away the rest of his career.
This is a total and utter stitch up, in the same way that the clubs lied to the fans about Ronaldo, and "not selling that lot a virus". Rooney will be sold in the summer, and in return he will appease the fans by signing a contract that appears to commit his long term future to the club to quieten down the natives.
In fact, I would be surprised if he even has signed a contract......it seems rather hastily put together given the legal wrangling over image rights etc, and given that there was no previous contract ready and on the table
that is actually an amazing point. one of the three biggest faces in global football and they've drawn this up since yesterday? surely not. it's definitely some sort of mind game, but why? the derby is too far away, and they've played liverpool. what reasons are there for this stitch up????
There's probably an agreement in principle in place with Rooney to let him go in the summer or even next year provided he signs the new contract to rule out the possibility of him buying out the final year of his old contract at the end of this season. It's pretty much all they can do in terms of damage limitation with a player who has made his mind up to quit, without leaving themselves massively out of pocket. It looks like the old fucler saved the club a few quid out of it all.
