I've been through the bad times but have always approached games with cautious optimism thanks to the memories that stand out...the first Derby win I saw under Keegan (was a little bit too young to appreciate the 5-1), the Dickov equaliser that saved us and the win at Ewood Park that took us up (not to mention blitzing the division when we were promoted again two seasons later). However, it is that optimism that causes me so much pain when we blow big opportunities (Fowler penalty vs Middlesbrough, FA Cup QF defeats, last season at the swamp). I wish I could be more pessimistic at times but I can't help but feel that a moment of magic will save us in every game, and will lead us to success somewhere down the line.

I am in the second group but am now starting to become optomistic.

I'm optimistic rather than optomistic. I'm also a bit of a [strike]smug[/strike] pedantic prick.

Fixed that for you.

Yes, I am aware of the irony involved here.

To be honest, I'm not that pedantic, I just love it when I can pick native speakers on spelling mistakes... which sort of makes me a smug prick.

I had been going to make a point about some fans being so deeply into class 2 that they can't even spell optimism anymore.

I am the most optimistic of City fans. to the extent that I have convinced myself that we can win both the Europa Cup and the FA Cup and are in with a big shout for the League title.

Maybe it was the Mercer/Alison era that rubbed off on me. Promotion, 1 years consolidating and then the explosion of success that proved to me it could be done...and done by City.
I hear a lot of rags who are permanently (even irrationally) convinced they will always win stuff because they always do. Rationally they are falling apart at the seams.
I hear a lot of Blues who are permanently (even irrationally) convinced we will always screw up because we always seem to. Rationally we arethe richest club with a great squad.

With our present set up, I fear no team.
I KNOW THAT YOU BELIEVE THAT YOU UNDERSTOOD WHAT YOU THINK I WROTE, BUT I AM NOT SURE YOU REALISE THAT WHAT YOU READ IS NOT WHAT I MEANT

Second group, exactly the same as IBH....I was alive (3 yrs old) when we last won something but too young to remember it. I'm old enough to have my blue family or parent and grandparent age to have regaled me in the late 70's and early 80's tales of the great era but also old enough to have then witnessed up close and personal the utter shite of most of the 80's, all of the 90's and much of the 00's.

I have absolutely no idea how I will react if we do win something....part of me still is pessimistic that we will/can do so despite the fact that my rational mind knows 100% that we have a squad now that is easily good enough in terms of talent and quality to win a trophy.

If/when we win something, I honestly thing I will end up bawling like a baby then screaming like some lunatic until I'm hoarse.....it will just be the most bizarre release of feelings

I think you could split City fans into 3 major groups;

Those who have seen us win stuff - Optomistic
Those of us who have never seen us win owt but were there in the dark days of the third tier - Pessimistic/Confused
Those who never saw how shite we used to be and have only started following City fairly recently - Optomistic

I reckon those of us in the 2nd group will find it the most difficult to adjust.

I'm definatley in the 2nd group.

Yours Faithfully,

Confused
