Training Thursday 17/2

Postby Douglas Higginbottom » Thu Feb 17, 2011 1:13 pm

Seems like a big day at Carrington with a club photoshoot planned. Not sure of the timing but there were all sorts of lorries, wagons around plus extra large tents set up. But training went ahead at 11 and first one out was MJ.He didn't last long though and after a word with Kidd and Andy Welsh he went in.Mario next out and it wasnt long before he and his twin were having a laugh.

Missing today were Shay,Milner,SWP,Nigel. Assulin was working with the EDS but actually one to one and later joined by Guidetti. The keepers today were split into two groups with just Joe and Stu together. So it was a group of 16 that started the usual jogging and warm ups.All seemed to be in good spirits and it's always good to see Mario smiling. Then into a passing game for about 10/15 minutes before the players who played most of the game in Greece went inside.

The rest switched to a session attacker v defender attacking which was fun to watch.A bunch of the EDS were called over for this session (CC,GA,SK,DM,AR and RW .... I like to test you with initials occasionally:)) Some entertaining battles in this session. DM took on Vieira who tried to show hi to his right but DM went right so Patrick put him into orbit.Vinnie at one point went past his marker, round the keeper then missed the goal.I think you might have heard his scream of anger.

Best on show for me was Assulin. He seemed to be as comfortable as anyone going either side and does move well with the ball. I am looking forward to seeing more of him in EDS games. Then it was into 2 on 2 attacks and when Vinnie was with Lescott it looked strong. Staying around to watch all this were Dzeko and Kolarov. The final part today was a 6 a side game on the pitch which by now had cut up quite a bit.

Goals in this from Jo,DM,Vieira at one end and 2 from Mario at the other.Plus Mario hit the post 2 or 3 times,GA once and Jo once. Stu Taylor kept his side going with some great saves including a penalty save from GA which would have levelled the scores. One highlight was from mario who flicked the ball up with his right when he had his back to goal and hit a left foot volley which brought a great save from Stu.His second goal was a bit special and he smashed it from about 20 yards straight at the keeper and it swerved a lot to somehow get straight through.Sounds like Mario was special but I would say he was ok with some special moments .He finished with a couple of pens against Joe where he did his usual of stopping (sort of) in his run up and sending him the wrong way both times.Joe was delighted, not.

No word on any of the injuries but with Notts C on Sunday I am sure no chances will be taken.

Doug, can you tell if GA is actually going to make it into the first team at some point or is he just another invisible Berti?

I think he will get there and possibly even this season from the bench if we get injuries. What he does when he gets his chance who knows.

Thanks Doug.

Is Mario moving properly & looking fully fit; ie not protecting his knee & not afraid to open up & sprint properly, like Torres seems to be?

The photoshoot....could it be for next seasons training kit?

I noticed on the OS that the academy lads were wearing white, yellow and black training kit? I don't know if the youngsters have different stuff from the seniors?

I noticed it on the piece about a free health check

Would have been handy if I'd opened up the article and read it!

First time for me to comment on your training report Doug - have read it for ages and it's always an interesting account.

Really hope Assulin gets a chance and takes it - would be good to see another creative option in midfield - we really need it.

If he reminds me of anyone it's Eyal Berkovic.

Now now Douglas, let's not be teasing like that. We don't want to Colin Bell/MJ this lad.

Cheers Doug, great report as usual. I really hope Assulin will get a run in soon, and will be involved with the first team near the end of the season.
