I suppose the issues are ( without going into Kolo's situation because he must be innocent till proven guilty ):

First, did a player take a substance which could improve his performance, enabling him to train more vigorously for instance. That would be cheating obviously.

Second, did he bring the game into disrepute. The answer has to be yes which is why the FA have a hard line policy.

Third, did a player take a drug which, on the contrary, could have worsened his performance thus cheating the fans and the club.

Finally, did he bring the club he plays for into disrepute. Answer again yes. So a stiff punishment is justified if a player is found guilty both by the FA and the Club.

Looking at it selfishly we're reasonably covered at Centre Back. Vinnie's back and he and Joleon are a decent pair. Boateng doesn't look bad as a replacement and Boyata is waiting in the wings. My worry would be if Kolo feels, however unreasonably, that he's being treated badly by the club. He could get it into his head that the club should be backing him rather than suspending him. That in turn could affect his brother whose form might suffer. Also could this episode affect team morale more generally? Hopefully not but let's face it we could have done without this at such a crucial part of the season.

City have carefully used the term "specified substance".

The implications may not be so serious

I interpreted that as the opposite.

Look at the facts we have so far - the FA have specified a substance and we've suspended him. Not good.

Supposedly a substance in a dietary supplement according to Sky. I just wish these footballers would realise you don't take anything except normal food and drink without checking with the medical staff.

So this guy is a Muslim, follows the Ramadan etc.... but takes drug? What a hypocrite if this is true. I hope we fuck him off.

I mean I don't take drugs or drink alcohol anyway but even if I did... if I was a Pro Footballer and on 100k+ a week and one of the conditions would be no alcohol and drugs... fuck yea I would stop drinking and taking drugs.

Specified Substance has a specific meaning in this context. Google Wada's specified substance list, and you'll see what I mean.

Unconfirmed reports that he tested positive for a substance found in a dietary supplement.

Joking aside, it could be this same supplement the lad in Scotland and touring SA Rugby players took. All were/ have been cleared of wrong doing I think

It must have been leaked to the press to run over the back pages tomorrow for the club to release the statement this early into the affair. Quick strong reaction from the powers at be.

Sounds like Kolo took something he didn't know he was. Probably end up with a 1 or 2 month ban.

As countless people have pointed out - it could be something in something, rather than out right cheating. Bit quick to jump on one of our own isn't it?

The key with "failure" of drug testing is what we would class as a failure.

Were all thinking its performance enhancing or illegal recreational use but under olympic testing something that could be prescribed by a doctor, sold over the counter in boots or purchased from holland and barrett could be illegal because of their ingredients.

Something similar happened to a hamilton player over xmas
