Manchester City defender Kolo Toure fails drugs test
Manchester City defender Kolo Toure has been suspended after testing positive for a specified substance.
The 29-year-old was informed by the Football Association after being tested at the Manchester derby last month where he was an unused substitute.
The World Anti-Doping Agency (Wada) defines a specified substance as one that is "more susceptible to a credible, non-doping explanation".
The punishment for this offence ranges from a warning to a two-year ban.
Hamilton Academicals midfielder Simon Mensing recently served a four-week ban after a specified substance was detected in his system.
After Toure's A sample returned positive, City confirmed in a statement that Toure had been suspended "pending the outcome of the legal process".
Ivory Coast international Toure, whose brother Yaya also plays for City, is a former club captain who joined City from Arsenal in July 2009.
The defender has gone on to make more than 50 appearances for City, although he was not involved in Wednesday's FA Cup victory over Aston Villa.
The failed test automatically triggered the suspension and it is understood that Toure was left out of the squad because the club had been made aware of the situation.
The City statement added: "There will be no further comment from the football club at this stage."
And on Thursday evening a FA statement read: "The FA can confirm that a player has been provisionally suspended from playing pending investigation, having tested positive for the use of a prohibited substance."
Mensing, 28, tested positive for the stimulant methylhexaneamine at the end of January and subsequently missed five matches after a period of ineligibility was imposed on him.
The player maintained he was unaware he had ingested the substance while using a dietary supplement - an explanation which was accepted by UK Anti-Doping.
Toure was the skipper of City until the start of the current campaign, when the armband was passed to Carlos Tevez.
The Ivorian defender was brought to the Premier League by Arsenal in 2002 and he remained with the London club until his £14m transfer to City.
Toure, who is under contract with City until the summer of 2013, was one of several high-profile arrivals in the summer of 2009 as then-manager Mark Hughes spent more than £100m on new players.
City are currently pursuing trophies on three fronts. They will play Reading in the quarter-final of the FA Cup, are set to take on Dynamo Kiev in the Europa League and lie third in the Premier League, 10 points behind leaders Manchester United.

'Mancini is doing everything wrong' - former Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland launches scathing attack on ex-boss
Irishman also criticises Ireland boss Trapattoni
Newcastle United midfielder Stephen Ireland has claimed the "family" values at Manchester City have vanished in a lengthy rant at his former club, national team and even home town.
The 24-year-old, who has yet to feature for Newcastle since joining on loan following a disappointing six month spell at Aston Villa, is set to make his Newcastle debut on Saturday at home to Everton but believes he was forced out of Eastlands.
“Mancini never liked me," he said to French magazine So Foot. "He’s doing everything wrong. He got rid of everyone at the club – even the cook left. The family club I spent nine years with exists no more. What happens when Mancini goes? He takes his 50 recruits with him. Also, since he’s been there City matches are incredibly dull.”
Ireland also blasted Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni and declared he will never play for the national team. The midfielder hasn’t played for his country since 2008 after falsely claiming his grandmother had died in order to pull out of a Euro qualifier against the Czech Republic.
“I won’t come back. I feel nothing for the national team. I don’t feel at all guilty when they lose and when they win I never say ‘oh dear, I could have been there’.
“Even if Ireland had qualified for the World Cup I wouldn’t have gone. People are calling for me to return, but I only ever played five games.
“International soccer doesn’t interest me. Going away for three days to play in Andorra – I’ve got better things to do."
Ireland went on to dismiss the expertise of current boss Trapattoni, claiming the Italian was arrogant.
“I’ve never seen anyone so arrogant,” Ireland continued. “I met him once. He was taking calls every two minutes and made me hang around for 15 minutes in his office.
“In the end, he said, ‘if you want to play then come, if not, it’s no problem’. He did that mainly so the press would leave him in peace.
“Foreign coaches, they’re no good.”
The Irishman’s hometown of Cork was also subject to the midfielder's rant, claiming he would rather "shoot" himself than return.
"Ireland is reaping what it sowed,” he said. “We built blocks of flats just for the sake of it and now there’s no-one inside them. It cost huge amounts of money and nobody is in a position to pay. But I don’t care about Ireland.
"I don’t know if I’ll go back one day. Live in Cork? I might as well shoot myself. I prefer Los Angeles.”

MICAH RICHARDS WANTS TO END TAUNTS
Micah Richards has told Manchester United fans to enjoy mocking Manchester City's trophy drought while they still can.
While the Red Devils have enjoyed much success in recent years, United fans have revelled in their rivals' misery, parading a banner on the Stretford End indicating how many years it is since the Blues last won a major trophy.
That was the 1976 League Cup and Monday was the 35th anniversary of when Dennis Tueart's overhead kick gave the Blues a 2-1 win over Newcastle at Wembley.
But Richards, 22, believes City could soon put an end to those taunts this season as they are set to face Championship side Reading at home in the FA Cup quarter-finals and have reached the last 16 of the Europa League.
Richards watched Birmingham upset Arsenal to win last week's Carling Cup final, lifting their first trophy for 48 years, and City's longest-serving player admits it got him thinking why the Blues haven't ended their own trophy drought in recent years.
"You see Birmingham winning something and you start to wonder, because we've got a great team here," he said.
"We all want to be a part of something special and win something for this club. It's just a case of going out there and doing it.
"It would take the pressure off if we got that first one and I think more could follow. I think the trophies would start coming thick and fast."
United fans have unveiled a new banner as each year has passed by but Richards admits the current City squad would relish being the ones that force them to bring the banner down.
"Yeah, it's something that drives the boys on a bit," he said. "It's good banter between the two sets of fans, but we don't think there's too much in it now between us and United.
"It would be nice to be a part of the team that pulls it down one day. I'm sure that if we keep working hard, that day will come soon.
"The boys who have come through the Academy, like me, would love to win something with this club. It would give us a really great and proud feeling.
"I've been playing for about five seasons now and having not won anything is a bit of a disappointment.
"But we've got a good team now, with the backing of the chairman, so hopefully times will change and we can win something.
"I believe we can win the FA Cup, and most of the competitions we're in, with this squad. It's just important that we don't get complacent and think we're there already."

Balotelli deaf to Mancini mentoring
Roberto Mancini admits he cannot get through to Mario Balotelli - but the Manchester City boss does not care as long as his young striker keeps on scoring.
With the Kolo Toure suspension drawing plenty of attention outside the club, Mancini must now focus his side on the Barclays Premier League encounter with Wigan.
That could mean another opportunity for the unpredictable Balotelli, who has rarely been out of the headlines himself since moving to England from Inter Milan.
As his former boss at the San Siro, Mancini should have known what to expect when he spent £24million on the 20-year-old.
However, any thoughts the pair have a special relationship can quickly be dismissed.
"He is not listening to me," said Mancini. "I speak but I don't think he listens."

Yeah the real reason they're looking at LBs is because Clichy is past it. As it stands now Gibbs will be starting soon, maybe as soon as next season.

I am more interested in learning that there is a football team in Tevezland called "Claypole".
