Goodbye Guidetti?

Postby jodrellblue » Thu Apr 28, 2011 7:26 pm

I know at one time he was quite highly rated but looks like he's had enough. Would have thought at 19 and getting to the bench he might have given it another season

http://www.skysports.com/story/0,19528, ... 03,00.html

Manchester City youngster John Guidetti has turned down a new deal with the Premier League club.

The Blues have offered Guidetti an extension to his current contract, which runs out at the end of the season.

The Swedish striker, who signed from IF Brommapojkarna in 2008, was loaned to Burnley this season and has recently appeared on the bench for City's first team.

But the 19-year-old hotshot feels his future lies elsewhere and hopes to secure a move to Germany, Italy or Spain as he will be a free agent.

"It's a good contract but simply not good enough," he told Sportbladet.
Better alternatives

"There are better alternatives. My contract expires this summer and then it's time to move.

"It's a perfect situation. I am a striker who should play in one of the best leagues."

Guidetti has made one first-team appearance for City, with his path to the first-team blocked by the likes of Carlos Tevez, Mario Balotelli and Edin Dzeko.

That's a beautifully pointless subheading.

As for the news, I'm only ever bothered to see young players leave when they're our own. I hope Nedum comes back, but would understand if he doesn't wanna be an understudy all season.

Fair enough agree with your point on 'our own'. I'm surprised that as the club move towards developing youth as part of FFP, Guidetti's up and off when he's appears to be close to getting at least some sub apperances.

Good luck to him, for reference:Bolton are not a "top" team. See also:Anelka, Sturridge, Petrov.

Can't blame him, he's probably better off somewhere he will get serious first team minutes. Robbie Mak is a starter in "one of the best leagues", I'm sure Guidetti can achieve similar.

According to Guidetti himself, we offered him several extensions to his contract. Personally I think his refusal to sign is the reason he hasn't featured this season instead of Jo. I think he's cutting off his nose to spite his face.

I don't know whether it's a money or playing time issue. He's a serious prospect by many accounts, so it could be either. I think he does need serious game time in a decent top league, and not with one of the Premiership's 'also rans'.

I expect him to end up somewhere like Roma, and us to get in the region of 3.5 mill in compensation.

Bit worried about the lack of youth players coming though recently.

Bar has been raised, few years ago Guidetti would have had 30-40 appearances by now, the academy has changed also, will be a while before we see a homegrown talent come through there.

Loaned to Burnley and did ok. Agree to a contract extension providing you're either going to be a serious contender for the first team or that you are allowed to join a premier league team on loan next season. You prove your worth and return at Christmas to one of the top 4 clubs.

Alternatively, take the extra grand a week now and pretend it's for the good of your career. If you're as good as you think you are, you'll end up at a good club again, but will you ever get the chance at a club as big as City again?

I understand this is the way it will be. A la Chelsea. But there was nothing I liked more than seeing rookies coming though into the first team.

Saying that I suppose the most recent one was Boyata. Maybe not having them coming though is for the best.

The academy will be the clubs lifeblood in a few years, they've said that from day one, it takes time to get it right though plus they need to be given chances.

Do you not rate Boyata?

Why would it take time to get it right? Didn't we have it right for years? Pretty sure I remember loads of articles praising the MCFC youth set up and all the players we had coming though.

No I don't is the short answer.

We did get it right for the club we were, it did its job. It has never produced the players Barca, Ajax or West Ham have produced which is where we want our academy to be.

Some of that was just hype, we had to produce players because we couldn't buy them. There's the guts of a decent team bouncing around but a fair few guys were just not that good, certainly not in the context of where we are now.

It might be a fun exercise to speculate on what sort of team we'd have if we used ex or present academy lads, but in reality it's history. That bunch of players was broken up and scattered.

The academy was great for a lower mid table side. Seriously, how many of those graduates would get near a top 4 team? SWP did and failed. Richards possibly when he first came through, then he fell away, maybe now he'd come close. Most of the rest have moved on and I can only think of Etuhu, Barton and Ireland in the PL and none of them are top class.

I suspect going forwards, the Academy will produce a lot more squad players - look at the rags with the likes of gibson, o'shea, brown etc. You wouldn't want them in the first 11 for any period, but they're decent back up and are happy to sit on the bench. They got lucky with a group of top players who came through all at once, but their system has dried up since then. West Ham produced the likes of Lampard and Cole in quick succession, but who since? The Chelsea youth team we beat in the final was the most expensive ever put together, as they raided all the top foreign academies and yet I can't think of many of them who've made it.

If you want top 4 quality players, there will only be a handful coming through every year. The chance of one of them being at a top 4 club before breaking through is remote and I think a lot of the top clubs are happy to let others do all the difficult bit of weeding out the chaff and then taking the cream (to mix metaphors). Barca do it to other clubs in Spain at a younger age and then Arsenal do it to Barca when they reach 16. I can't imagine any one club ever managing to have a production line of youth players coming through, good enough to keep you at the top without having to invest in proven quality to supplement the occasional one you find.

For City, I suspect we'll keep looking, hoping we find a 12 year old Messi, but we'll also buy more 16/17 year olds, where you're more certain they will make it, but even then, a huge proportion won't be good enough.
