It wasn't quite so disastrous as the slip that led to Sergio Ramos dropping the Copa del Rey under Real Madrid's open-topped bus during their victory parade, but perhaps if Manchester City follow up on Vincent Kompany's promise to win more silverware for the side, they won't ask him to look after the trophies.

The defender was entrusted with the FA Cup after City's 1-0 win over Stoke at Wembley and subsequently let it slip from his grasp en route from the changing rooms to the team bus. Fortunately it escaped the fate of the Copa del Rey – which was crushed – and was untarnished.

Still, while the experience could have dented the trophy, it has not dented Kompany's ambition. He believes the Cup success will herald more triumphs in years to come as City's £300m spending spree finally begins to pay dividends.

"I think the club, the fans, everybody deserves it," he said. "Terrific celebration but you could already hear people: 'We want it more often.' That's the feeling that you want to have again."

City's triumph came just four days after they sealed fourth place in the Premier League and Kompany added: "We've laid down the foundation, I feel, not only with this but with the qualification for the Champions League. Those are foundations for us and we're going build a house on it now.

"We've always gone a step forward in the last three years I've been here. Let's just think of achieving something better than this year and we will already be closer to our target, which is ultimately to some day win the league."

Though the club's manager, Roberto Mancini, imposed an alcohol ban on his players ahead of Tuesday night's Premier League game against, of all teams, Stoke, Kompany was determined to spend the rest of his weekend enjoying the club's triumph.

"After 35 years, you win together, you celebrate together," he said, though perhaps his team-mates will think twice before asking him to raise a glass to their success.
