Just To Clear One Misconception Re: CL Qualification

Postby Niall Quinns Discopants » Mon May 16, 2011 10:43 am

We would NOT be playing Bayern or any other European Giant in the qualification round. Teams are seeded according to UEFA coefficient and we, just like all the big clubs, are guaranteed to be seeded. We'll play one of the minnows still left in the competition.

If you ask me, that's fucking dodgy because they try to squeeze all the golden cows in the actual competition but will work for us if we can't guarantee.
Sometimes we're good and sometimes we're bad but when we're good, at least we're much better than we used to be and when we are bad we're just as bad as we always used to be, so that's got to be good hasn't it?

Can someone explain in full the advantage of finishing 3rd rather than 4th?

Automatically through to champs league proper. No qualifier needed.

Straight into a group? What seeding pot would we be likely to go into then? I'd imagine the 2nd or 3rd (coefficient=good, CL pedigree=nonexistant).

If that's true then it's great news for me because the media I've heard, seen & read have all specifically said we won't be seeded and could meet any of those top clubs (in the qualifying game).

When I said in another thread that Stoke/Bolton rather than Bayern h/a was good motivation to win the next two and get third, I didn't really think much about the potential opposition and now that I think about it, you are right, we won't be playing anyone of that standard should we finish fourth. However, we have the prospect now of beating two teams whose seasons are over and who are within an hour or travel from us, rather than going to some far flung location to play the champions or runners up of a minor league in a tricky tie.

our coeffient is 47.157, we are not guaranteed to be seeded. 5 teams with the highest coeffient are seeded.

some other teams who will make the play offs

Bayern 118.887
Villareal 75.408
Lyon 92.735 or PSG 51.735
Udinese 27.110 or Lazio 23.110

some others who could if they make and/or survive the 4th round

Benfica 81.239
Dinamo Kiev 60.776
Fenerbahçe 50.510
Twente 41.025

it depends which teams out of those last few make the play offs, but could well end up being benfica, dynamo, lyon, villareal and bayern who are seeded and therefore potential opponents.

arsenal btw have a coefficient of 108.157 and would definitely be seeded.

We have a two legged tie with Stoke/Bolton to qualify direct for the Champions League, thats the nub of it.

Well they make the pairs so that all the seeded teams are there first and then they draw all the oppositions. So either you are seeded or you are not.

You are right about "minnows" though. There are some tougher teams there as well but no one who we shouldn't be able to deal with if we are honestly going to challenge in the competition.

mate, i'm not saying we are hopeless if it should come to it, but i'd rather try to avoid playing against cl quarter final regulars like lyon or bayern if possible.

and as i see it, better collect 6 points from stoke and bolton than to hope for a favourable draw.

Seeding, according to the neutral viewer has long been considered unfair. To most people using seeds in tournaments, it is seen as a logical thing to do. It allows equal spreading of all the teams and it avoids all the small clubs and big clubs being cluttered together.

Utd have lost loads of Champions Lg games against 'minnows' in the group stages. That's what the groups were designed for; as a safety net for when the big sides fuck up, as they often do. We have a very decent chance of being knocked out in that qualifying leg, even if we can't play Bayern.

I bet we can still get the Italian 4th placed team & we couldn't beat Juve this season. It's a vital two games we have coming. If Arsenal finish 4th, I recon there's a fair chance they'll fuck up too.

This tells me the chance of not being seeded is bigger than being seeded. Better get that third spot!

Three teams allready higher than us are in the group (Bayern, french team and Villareal), out of the teams playing the first qualifying round atleast three teams have better ranking than us, these teams will also be seeded in the first round so chances are they will go through. Doubt two out of those three will fail to make it into the second qualifying round where we enter the frame.

As far as I know Bayern are likely to finish third in the Bundesliga which will mean they have to prequalify. Their co-efficient will then mean they are seeded way above us and we can therefore play them.

This was pretty much confirmed on Sky a coupla days back.

As far as I read Bayern cannot get direct CL spot and will end up on the german equivalent of the english 4th spot. So they will be in the qualifyer for sure.
