It's an old saying of my lands that has probably been badly translated. When someone kick the ball so badly as Milner has done earlier sending it directly into the stand you say that he has "inverted" (as in left on right) his shoes

We have something similar here - we say he's got two left feet.

That's used down south in Rome (C'ha du' sinistri). I tend not to use it since I'm a left-hander and -footer (I barely use my right leg to stand, not even try to kick the ball, when I play football)
