Elliot Ness and his men were the 'untouchables' - NOT Al Capone and the like. They were given this name because they couldn't be bought off by gangs - they were 'untouchable' in that they were upstanding and incorruptible.

This has to be one of the biggest misunderstandings in modern history. I reckon I've explained this myself about 15 times over the last five years or so.

Dr. Dre has to be one of the few people on earth to actually get it the right way round. His nifty 'let me welcome everybody to the wild, wild west / the state that's untouchable like Elliot Ness' rhyme in 'California Love' actually made correct use of the term.

Nothing to do with the thread like, but I thought you might benefit from having that cleared up :)

There is nothing Beeks wrote that needed correcting. He has not stated that FIFA are The Untouchables (note the capitals dictating a proper noun) but that they are untouchable because there is nobody but themselves to police them.

Thought I might stick my oar in and clear that up!

You've not cleared anything up. His insinuation was like that FIFA behave like an 'untouchable' mafia gang and an Elliot Ness figure is needed to 'bring them down'. I understand and agree with his argument, but the reference point was the wrong way around (as I stated).

I'll give you 10 out of 10 for smarm, though.

There used to be a TV series called 'The Untouchables' about Elliot Ness & Co. It starred Robert Stack as Elliot Ness. Robert Stack of course was later widely known for his role as Ted Striker in 'Airplane'.

This adds nothing to the thread but I don't care either.

If the two World Cup host winning bids are proved to have been successful due to corruption, then the bidders themselves were corrupt in their dealings & therefore both should be scrapped & the process should be started again, with a brand new committee & the two countries banned from taking part. The people found to be corrupt should face criminal charges & claims for damages.

No way can those countries or anyone else found to have been involved in bribes & corruption be allowed to profit from it.

A preferable thing imo would be for all the top footballing countries to get together & begin organising tournaments between themselves, with members of their governments forming the initial organising committee & then invite other countries to apply to join them. Start again from scratch.

Why thank you kind sir, I only ever got a 9.5 for smarm before but I am honoured to accept full marks from you!

Just one question oh knowledgeable one...

How is it that you know what Beeks was insinuating?

I can understand that you may have interpreted it like that but how do you know what he was thinking when he made the post? Perhaps it is you that has leapt to the wrong conclusion?

Exactly! It strikes me as odd that this hasn't been at the heart of the brouhaha.

As for The Untouchables, I've only seen the film with Kevin Costner (Ness) and Robert De Niro (Capone) which is.... good, not great. Just IMDB'd your series to see when it ran. All I can say is that John68 and Doug had better hold on tight to their Werther's Originals!

I was just worried that the question 'Who were 'The Untouchables'?' could come up in a pub quiz, with your answer leaving you red-faced. Not beyond the realm of possibility!

The Elections have obviously been highlighted as a week point by the FA, aparently several complaints were made about Warner from other countries but 'dealt with internally' by Blatter, however Blatter seems to think that Warner supports the other fella and has stopped covering his back, opening the door for people to start throwing these allegations out without Blatter cutting out thier 'perks' which is what would have happened previously.

The other FIFA members are exchanging shots at the moment.

Robert Stack was yer man. Used to be on when I was a kid, but too late for me because of the violence - those were the days!! Mind you they were old repeats, 10 years after the series was made.

I was listening to a FIFA expert the other day who was saying that Warner is actually the stronger of the 2 in terms of vote and that Blatter has kept him close and covered his arse many times (which becomes quite obvious looking back). Where this has fallen short between them is that Bin Hammam is stuck in the middle and it's probably easier to to stick Warner to get the vote against Hammam.

They're all cunts of the highest order and like Doomy says, we need to start again.
